Sirens. A million voices speak at once. You feel yourself being lifted up and then the motion of being in a moving vehicle. You try to open your eyes, but they won't cooperate and you don't understand why and it doesn't matter because sleep takes over.

"She's stable right now, but don't excite her too much," a soft female voice says. You hear footsteps fade away and a close beeping that sounds like it is inside your head before a scraping of chairs assaults your ears and you know it's not.

"Shhh, don't wake her up," someone says in a hushed voice. You're not sleeping, but whoever is here doesn't know that, so you try once again to open your eyes. Slowly, you open them, trying to adjust to the lights.

"It's alright, y/n. Take your time," Ashton says softly.

Your eyes adjust to see Michael on your left, Luke standing at the end of your bed, and Ashton on your right all with matching wet cheeks and puffy red eyes.

"What happened? Where's Cal?" you get out in a scratchy voice. Your head is pounding and most of your body is stiff as you lay in the hospital bed. Luke looks out the window while Michael rests his head in his hands. You look to Ashton who breathes deeply, running his hands through his hair.

"He's, uh, he's in surgery, y/n," he tells you, voice cracking. "We don't know anything right now except that the injuries he sustained are really serious. When we got here, he'd already been in surgery for an hour and a half and it's going on three hours now."

The last thing you remember seeing before being here in the hospital was Calum face down through the windshield of the car and now you can't stop the tears from flowing down your face.

"Oh my God. Oh my God," is all you can say. Minutes pass and none of the boys say anything as they let you cry until you can't anymore. "The last thing I saw, he was lying through the windshield. He wasn't moving. I couldn't do anything."

"Y/n, it's not your fault. It's the stupid drunk driver's," Michael says as a few tears escape his eyes.

"I need to be there when he comes out of surgery. You guys have to help me out of this bed," you tell them, pulling the blanket that covers you back, revealing what you didn't see before. Your eyes grow wide at the sight of your legs - purpled, swollen, and a long cut on your left leg from your knee down to your ankle. Your right foot is concealed in a big cast and when you move forward in an effort to take it off, a pain in your stomach stops you and you let out a small gasp. Ashton places a hand on your shoulder and eases you back in the bed.

Luke clears his throat and moves to sit down at the foot of your bed. His eyes shine with tears when he looks at you.

"So, uh, when the ambulance arrived at the scene, the car you were in was in the ditch," he says. You shake your head, not believing what he's saying. You know the car was on the side of the road, not the ditch.

"The car was only on the side of the road, Luke, not in the ditch," you slowly say.

This time he shakes his head at you.

"Apparently the force of the impact pushed the car so that it was on the edge. The drunk driver fled the scene, hitting your car again when they sped off and it ended up going in the ditch. The both of you were found unconscious and a few feet away from the vehicle," Luke says sadly.

A new wave of tears flow down your face and Ash grabs your hand in comfort.

"Y/n, you have a major concussion. Your right ankle is broken, you have multiple cuts from the glass that ended up tearing some muscles in your left leg, some broken ribs, and some other internal damage," Ashton says in a quiet voice. "You'll be going in for another surgery soon, but we wanted to see you and let you know what happened."

You take shaky breaths as you try to calm down. They all just watch you and you can't handle it anymore.

"Thank you," you breathe out. "But I want to be alone right now if you don't mind."

The three of them stand up at the same time and take turns giving you a light hug before leaving. When they're gone, you stare up at the ceiling and replay the whole day through your head. How could this have happened? you think to yourself as a tear falls down your cheek. A few minutes later, a nurse comes in to take you for your surgery.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You wake up from your surgery about 12 hours later in the same room you were in before. Of course you know you weren't in surgery for that long and were just sleeping for all that time, but you can't believe you did that. Some food is on a tray for you on the movable table that had been left next to the bed. As you are eating, the door to your room opens and Michael sticks his head in. He says something to someone beside him in the hallway before walking in with Luke and Ashton. You stop eating and move the tray away from you.
"How is he? I want - No, I need to see him," you say to the three of them.
"He's out of surgery and he's stable. I'm sorry, y/n, but you can't see him right now. None of us can," Michael answers softly.
"Why? Why can't I see him?" you demand.
Michael scratches the back of his head, exhaling air before looking you right in the eye.
"He can't remember. He doesn't remember. All he knows is that he was in a bad car accident and that's it, y/n. That's it."
