It's strange being in a car. I've only rarely ridden in wagons where some animal is pulling it along. In the seam, we travel on foot. The seats are actually quite comfortable & the interior is pretty, however; the ride is fairly short because the justice building is close to the train station.
Once I'm out of the car, camera crews, photographers, & reporters swarm me & the Everdeen girl. I'm almost blinded by the flashes on cameras & deafened by a dozen of Capitol reporters commentating on the event. I look up at the screens on the wall of the train station & see my face plastered all over them. I notice something in the bottom corner of all of the screens. Oh my God, it's the Capitol seal which means I'm on live television right now & I look a mess. My eyes are puffy & my nose is red, my hair is damp & greasy from sweat, & there are random wet spots around my shirt. They're probably Frank & Mikey's tears.
This is what I feared, I look like the typical district 12 tribute. Shaky, messy, & looks like they've been crying a lot. Meanwhile the girl from my district is stone cold & emotionless, she almost looks like she could be a career. I blew my very first impression for the people in the Capitol to see what I'm like & bet if I'll make it past the first day of the games. Since the reapings don't air until later, this is really the first time everyone in Panem gets to see me.
We're finally able to push our way through the pressmen & camera crews to where a train to the Capitol awaits us. Once the doors close behind us the train immediately takes off, startling me a bit. The speed of the train awes me. Of course, I never been on a train before since travel between the districts is forbidden unless it's for officially sanctioned duties. For us it's transporting coal, but this is no ordinary coal train. This is a high-tech Capitol monorail that has to at least go 250 miles per hour, our trip to the Capitol will take no less than a day.
It's said the Capitol was once a place formerly known as Denver, Colorado. A city a mile above sea level. Even before Panem became a nation it was still a place where the affluent & propertied lived. Nothing has changed really for almost a century except maybe the fashion.
The Everdeen girl & I are given our own quarters that are pretty lavish for being on a train. The rooms have a massive bed, drawers full of clothes, & even a bathroom with a shower. Melanie says for me to wear what I want, do what I want, everything is at my disposal. Just be ready for dinner in an hour. I decide to take a shower since I sweated a lot during the reaping today. I've never taken a shower before, let alone bathed in warm water. In district 12 we never have water at a somewhat decent temperature unless we boil it. Being in a shower in like being in a summer rain, but hotter. I wash myself with a pleasant smelling green soap, much better quality than the soap we make out of animal fat & ash at home.
There's quite a selection of clothes for me to wear. In the drawers there's things from bright Capitol suits to luxurious fur pajamas. Of course, I wouldn't wear any of that. I find a drawer full of seemingly normal clothes & dress myself in a black shirt, brown jacket, & brown pants. At the last minute, I remember my gold mockingjay pin. I take it off of my father's shirt & secure it to the collar of the shirt I have on now. I take a good look at it again. The bird in the middle is what really intrigues me.
