Luke sipped a juice box as he leaned against the shaded tree in the quad.

He slipped away from the cafeteria so he could have a quiet place to study, although Ashton followed behind him.

He didn't say anything about it because he sort of enjoyed Ashton's company, though he got rowdy at times.

Ashton was always rowdy.

When Luke was in the 6th grade, he would eat his lunch in the back of the library. Ashton was in the 7th grade at the time, and he would always run into the library to hang out with the old librarian, whom he was reminded of his grandmother. But he would always cause a ruckus, which annoyed Luke.

Luke was a chubby kid back then, and he could never make friends. But somehow, the two managed to become friends after one of Ashton's shenanigans, where Luke ended up sitting on him because he was so angry.

The two of them would hang out every day. They were inseparable. They were like brothers, until one day when Luke cut himself on one of the bookshelves, and Ashton copied, grabbing Luke's bleeding palm, and then they became blood brothers.

When Ashton moved to another school to start high school, Luke was alone again. But they reunited when Luke was in the 9th grade.

Luke began to notice how different Ashton was in school. He had made new friends, and was sort of popular. Luke however, had a hard time making friends. Ashton was still present in his life, but he wasn't the same Ashton. But Luke couldn't say anything, because he thought he would hurt their friendship, and that was the last thing he wanted.

Later in the year, Luke became friends with Michael and Calum, and when Ashton had failed 12th grade—for unmentionable reasons—he came into the picture.

Ashton was sprawled across the grass, drumming his fingers on his thigh as he held his phone in one hand.

"I noticed you've been hanging out with Arabella quite frequently lately." Ashton spoke, his eyes never leaving his phone.

Luke nodded, as if Ashton could hear it. "It's not like it matters. She's gay anyways."

"She told you?" He asked. Luke shook his head in response. "Not exactly."

"Why don't you ask her about it, you know, since you two are like best friends?" Ashton suggested, rolling over to face Luke.

"We're not even that close. And besides, that's personal. That's like her asking me about my sex life." Luke said, flipping through the pages of his textbook.

"Which by the way, is nonexistent." Ashton added, followed by a groan from Luke.

"Like I was saying," Luke continued. "I can't just randomly bring it up."

"Well then find a way." Ashton said, nudging Luke's knees.

"Why do you wanna know so bad, dude?" Luke muttered. "What the hell, man? I mean- Look at her!" Ashton exclaimed, baffled by Luke's total obliviousness.

"You hang out with her all the time, don't you ever imagine yourself just—banging her." Ashton chuckled, running a hand through his curly locks.

Luke sat, taken aback.

"I don't know-" He stuttered. "I mean,"

"Just admit it, dude. You do." Ashton smirked. Luke sighed in defeat, although he did not pay much to Ashton's snarky comment.

"And I'm pretty sure the fact that your sex life is nonexistent is because all you ever eat is dinosaur nuggets." Ashton added, rolling his eyes. "Can't forget your damn juice boxes." He groaned, as Luke loudly and proudly sipped his apple juice.

Later in the evening, Luke walked home by himself.

He didn't have to wait for her anymore, since they already finished their project.

Part of him was glad that they did, because it meant that he wouldn't have to wait in the rain anymore and he could just go straight home after school. But another part of him was sad, because it probably meant that they would spend less time together. Even though Arabella clearly saw him as a friend, did it mean that they would still do normal friend things, even when they didn't have a project on their minds?

Luke shrugged it off. He needed a distraction from all of the thinking.

He slipped into a pair of basketball shorts and a hoodie and turned on the TV, flicking through the many channels.

He fell asleep after an hour. And he dreamt of her.
