A Perfect System

It was another uneventful day for the young inspector. She stretched and yawned before preparing herself for another day of working with the enemy of true justice. The Sybil System. She detested Sybyl for what it did to her, what it did to Shinya. She was powerless in this fight, however she vowed she'd find a way to cheat the system so he could return home again. She hadn't quite thought of a full length plan as to how or when she would pull it off but nevertheless, Tsunemori was a determined woman. She'd do anything to bring him back, even if it meant putting her own life at stake. Akane stuck herself deep into her own thoughts. She thought of what she needed to do in order to fight the system behind the scenes and unexpectedly, so that both Sybyl and the citizens of Japan won't be able to notice. She had to go incognito and find the weakness within the system. "Every system has a weak point, she thought. "So where is yours, Sybyl?" Akane clasped her hands together, thinking deeply about the possibilities, and how she could bring it to its knees, so to speak. After thinking as hard as she could, the young woman was unable to come up with anything. She clenched her teeth together, knowing she wouldn't be able to do this alone. How could she? She was only an enforcer after all. Akane sat up and walked to the balcony. Once again shrouding herself in the familiar scent of the Spinel stick. She was in complete, bittersweet euphoria. She stood for several minutes before realizing she could be late for work had she stayed there any longer. She put the cigarette out and walked over to her car.

The sound of gunfire rang through his ears. Images of his fallen comrades, reduced to nothing but piles of gore. Legs, torsos, and internal organs were strewn across the battlefield. Shinya could still hear some of them screaming in sheer agony. The sound of their screams were all too familiar to the the man. Much to his surprise and relief, it was only a nightmare. He sat up quickly in his tent. His forehead dripping profusely with sweat, he huffed loudly, clenching at his chest in the hopes to calm his now rapidly beating heart. He was trying his best to remain calm. Eventually, after a few moments passed, he regained his sanity and went to join his comrades for lunch and a briefing.  Ahmed sat next to his friend and immediately noticed the bags under Shinya's eyes. With broken English, he attempted to ask, "What wrong Sheenyah, Did you sleep bad?" Kogami smirked at the man with acknowledgement. "Yeah, it was just a nightmare, don't worry about me, I'll be fine." Ahmed just nodded at his reply and put his hand on Shinya's shoulder. "If need anything, I am here." He gave the Japanese man's shoulder a firm pat before taking his hand away to rest on his knee. Shinya smiled again and nodded to his friend. The make-shift mess hall was buzzing with noise from the other soldiers. Upon first joining this group of "radicals" Shinya found the banter among the hardy men to be quite irritating at times. However, after years of watching old comrades being shot down dead or mortally wounded, he found the sound of the loud drunken laughing here and there to be quite soothing. He had enough depression as it was with missing Japan and that glamorous woman to which he said, "If I make it out of here alive, come find me again" before saying what they both thought to believe were their final goodbyes...until they were both taken into custody and held at gunpoint by Colonel Wong and his army. It seemed fate couldn't keep them a part after all as they where both whisked into a life or death situation. Or so he thought. Luckily for them, the MWPSB wouldn't let justice be diminished. He still remembered that day ever so vividly. Shinya was harshly snapped back to reality as he was called by their leader for attention. He listened with intent to the instructions. Making a mental note of every word as per usual. Although hearing the name of the location in which their next mission would take place made Shinya freeze.

The voice of their leader could be heard as clear as a bell; "Men, as you all know we have been quite successful in our fight against the injustice that is Sybyl. However, there is one place where Sybyl remains still  very much in control and that place is Japan. Now, It is absolutely crucial that we do what we can to ensure the freedom of humankind by completely abolishing the corrupt system and replacing it with true democracy once and for all! Tomorrow we leave at 19:00. Be on your feet. Stay alert and whatever you do, make sure you do whatever it takes to see that power and freedom is returned to Japan and its people!" The men all cheered loudly and shouted obscenities, chanting "Down with Sybyl, Down with Sybyl" over and over again. Shinya's heart sunk, now taking in the fact he would have to go back there after all. He would even have to face them again. His old friends, his colleagues, even her.  What was the man to do? He wanted to try and convince the colonel  to direct their plans elsewhere but he knew it was futile. Once plans were established, it was best not to question it. They were soldiers and did what they needed to do. There was no room for questions in the field of battle. Shinya was finally coming to terms with his past. He was ready to let everything go and be stuck in the past up until this point. Now he was forced to remember everything that happened. He was forced to remember his mistakes. He was forced to remember all the good times and the glamorous woman that was his ex partner, inspector Akane Tsunemori. The woman that tried so desperately to show him that he was not the monster he thought he was and ultimately failed. In his eyes, he had become the very monster she was trying to reassure him about.

The day Kogami Shinya killed Shougo Makishima...

Was the day he sold his soul.
