They sat, looking at each other and hoping for the other to make the first move. However, they were both too paralyzed with fear to even consider doing it themselves.

"So," Theodora trailed off. "Um, this is the part when you—?"

"Right." Paul agreed but didn't move a muscle.

More silence.

Alas, this time it was accompanied with a mosaic of memories for Theodora.

Together, they'd run and jump through the fields at six. By seven, their names were synonymous with each other. At eight, they grasped the concept of forever by realizing that's how long they'd be friends. Nine saw their friendship go through a particularly hard time when Paul ditched Theodora to hang out with a boy named George. However, he knew that he could never replace his Theo and, by ten, they were inseparable once more.

That's when things changed and not for the better in any way, shape or form.

Back in the present, her mind was running at a mile a minute. Boy, did that memory fuck her up. For here she was, about to have her first kiss with a boy that she used to consider a brother.

Theodora couldn't do it for she was too deep inside of her own head.

Oh god, how she wanted to, but didn't have the heart to admit to herself that their relationship had changed.

Naturally, she came to this realization at the exact same moment Paul hawked up the courage to kiss her.

With his face mere inches away from her own, she pulled back and hopped off his bed.

"You know, maybe this wasn't the best idea. Thanks for offering but I'll be fine with the whole Mick situation." Theodora was trying to convince herself more than she was trying to convince Paul.

Feeling his heart sink, the doe-eyed boy got up as well. "But—"

She just slammed the door in his face.

Paul leaned back on the wall beside the doorway and pondered. Maybe he had been wrong about Theodora. He'd built himself up to believe that the way he felt about her — the racing heats and breathless gazes — was mutual.

Guess not, he thought.

Crash! The sound of the door being thrown open had the boy shaking and clutching at his chest.

What the hell was so important that it called for the door being thrust open like that?

He quickly realized the answer for there she was, big eyes wide and full of wonder. In one motion, Theodora had him by the front of his shirt and pulled his lips right to hers.

She'd changed her mind.

Temporarily.
