The entire class spun to face me. The looks they had on there faces read "oh she actually does stuff" and "what could a girl like her do to get sent to Dr. Charleston?" At our school, getting called to the principles office was like a main goal for mostly everyone. Everyone tried their hardest to do something bad enough that Charleston would be involved. I sighed and stood, ignoring a questioning glance from Sue as I walked toward the door, feeling the gazes of my classmates on my back as I left.
In the hallway, I took a moment to breathe before beginning that walk of shame to the office. Since everyone had heard the intercom announcements, and I was well known around the school as "that drug family's daughter," everyone that was out in the halls or at the pods working on late work or tests gave me questioning and interested glances. Suddenly everyone payed attention to me. Huh, that's weird.
"Karev!" Someone called from behind me. I stopped and spun on my heel, noticing Amy before hearing her talk again. "What did you do!?"
I'd been stupid to think that Amy was going to ask anything else - I never do anything so my name getting called to Charleston's office was suddenly the biggest thing since the newest iPhone. "I don't know," I replied. I wasn't lying, I hadn't done anything wrong, well, nothing that the school would be calling me down for. Sure I stole from Walgreens two days ago, but that was information only the police knew, not my school, and besides, why would they care?
"I have to go," I told Amy, turning back around and continuing the long walk to the office. Why did my science class have to be the furthest room away from the office?
Eventually I made it to the office, and I was surprised to see my parents there. I flinched inwardly. What on earth would be so big that my parents would be here? Well there was only one way to find out so I looked at the secretary, who gave me a blank look and said, "have a seat" in a monotone voice that gave me shivers. I didn't look at my parents at all, I wouldn't want to on a normal day.
I sat in a broken plastic chair that was an ugly maroon color, though the stains all over it suggested high schoolers had not been kind to it. I was uncomfortable sitting in this disgusting chair, but that was all there was so I would just have to put my 'big girl pants' on and live with it, I doubted Dr. Charleston would be long.
Just as I thought, Charleston appeared in her doorway moments later. "Karev Grey," she said, looking me square in the eye. I couldn't help but notice that while her right eye was staring deep into my own eye, her left one seemed to be wandering toward the side. Now that was weird. I shifted my weight to my right foot awkwardly, praying that Charleston would stop staring at me.
Then she did.
"Please step into my office, I'll be with you in a moment," she said with a cool, uneven voice.
I walked into her office, which was surprisingly small for a principle. The room had no windows, which made the dark gray walls even darker than they already were. The room gave me a bad vibe that got worse when I noticed random splatters of dark red on the shabby pale gray carpet.
How on earth did Charleston spend her entire day in this dark, creepy room. I looked around more and a wave of cold french fry smell (Andrew xD) hit my nose. Behind the mess of paper on Charleston's desk was uncountable McDonalds bags. Cheeseburgers were all over the desk, which made me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe.
That's also when I noticed all the squished fries on her chair. Did the lady sit on these fries everyday!?
Disgusted yet amused, I stood waiting for Charleston, who appeared in the doorway a moment later. "Karev, have a seat," she said, pointing to a gray chair with dark red splatters all over it. Why was everything in this room gray!?
"What is it you need to see me for Dr. Charleston?" I asked, trying my best to not look frightened, though my brain was telling me to get the heck out of this room.
"I've been watching you, Miss Grey," Charleston said in a dark voice, her blue eyes staring again into my own, well, that creepy wandering eye went to the cheeseburgers littering her desk.
"I know my grades aren't the best.." I started, but Charleston cut me off.
"I'm not talking about your grades, Miss Grey. I've been watching YOU. I just love that sweater you bought yesterday at Target," she said.
Holy crap what the heck!? I wanted to get out of there, only I realized that she'd locked the door. A chain hung around it with a heavy-looking metal padlock.
"However I also saw you carrying boxes labeled "keep out of other hands." Care to tell me what was in those boxes?" Charleston looked at me and pushed her glasses down.
My eyes widened. This stalker principal was getting scarier by the second.
"Uh, I can't," I replied. That was the new cocaine shipment we'd received yesterday, there was no way I was going to tell Charleston about that. "Well then I guess I'll have to force it out of you won't I?" She rose from her seat, metal bat in hand. I stared at the dark red stains all over the bat, the handprints and splatters freaking me out even more.
She walked over to me. "I'll ask again. Care to tell me what it was in the box you were carrying, Miss Grey?"
"No"
Grinning widely, Charleston swung the bat at me.
