I continued to dance with her, completely lost in the moment. This wasn't me

Heaving a sigh, I remembered the reason why I invited her in the first place. For sure, she would be heartbroken after I'd told her what had happened with Ace.

But what if she didn't believe me?

Doesn't matter. I have to tell her either way. Let's just hope this turns out well.

The song had just ended and people began leaving the dance floor to their tables. I noticed that Brent's parents had finally seated themselves at the table, everyone quieting themselves for an announcement.

I removed my hands from around Brent's neck, stopping only an inch away from him.

"Welcome, everyone. It's great to have all of you here in celebration of Smithy's fortieth anniversary." Alyssa said loudly so that everyone could hear.

Brent's father stood up, clearing his throat. "It was on this day that my father had created this company and as you all know, it will only be a few years before my son," he gestured towards Brent, "will take over."

I turned to Brent, raising a curious brow. He didn't seem like the guy who would willingly manage a company, especially since he would usually blabber on about sports. Brent rolled his eyes and shrugged as if to say yeah right.

His father started to talk about their upcoming campaign and Brent, being the one to dislike business talks, took my hand and dragged me out of the mansion.

"Brent, what are we doing?" I giggled as he proceeded to tug on my hand.

"Getting some fresh air," he responded. "Don't you think it's a little cramped in there?"

"Well yeah, but your parents were speaking–"

He interrupted, "Who cares." Then he stopped pulling and I realised that we were by a pool. A big one, may I add.

"So you decided to take me swimming?" I sat down on the edge of the pool. Removing my heels and slightly pulling the dress up my legs, I placed my feet in the cold water.

"I need to tell you something."

I look towards him, "What about?"

*listen to the attached yt song*

He walked over and followed my actions, pursing his lips as he stared at me. "I just need you to listen, and don't say anything until I finish."

Frowning, I said, "Why?"

"It's important."

"Okay, go on." I pushed back a strand of hair that fell in front of my face.

Brent took a deep breath. What could this possibly be about?

I clenched my jaw, my heartbeat increasing at the thought of her hating me after this.

Just do it.

Swallowing down the lump in my throat, I decided to just get straight to the point. "Ace... is using you."

I could see Mary visibly freeze, "Wow, I thought this was over... Why do you always do this - bring Ace into everything, to try and turn me against him?"

"Mary–"

"No! I'm sick of this! Just stop it! I thought I came here to forget, but here I am, listening to the same shit you brought on me last time..." Pulling her legs out of the water, she stood up, her body shaking.

"Mary you have to listen to me, I'm trying to h–"

She shook her head, "Why can't you just leave it?! I'm going, please just leave me and Ace alone." Taking a long deep breath, she said two simple words that could only tear my heart apart.

"Goodbye, Brent."

At that moment, I could definitely feel my heart break, shattering into billions of pieces, unable to be fixed...

Did I really just lose her?

I was so sure that she would've listened, but who am I kidding, she wouldn't...

• MARY •

My vision suddenly became blurry, only just registering that I was crying, the warm tears continuously falling. Those two words must've been the hardest thing I have ever said, I was saying goodbye to one of my best friends. Someone who could always make me smile.

I picked up my heels, shakily turning my back towards him before strutting away, pursing my lips.

Was it really over? Our friendship?

My face crumbled at the thought, but I had to stay strong. It wasn't even worth it, I held my breath and closed my eyes as I continued to walk.

Suddenly, my arm was pulled back. "No." I looked back at the voice. "No, I'm not leaving you alone. Not until you listen to me."

I opened my mouth to speak but he beat me to it, "I went over to Ace's house, thinking I had forgotten something... And I heard him talking, he was talking about you on the phone. So I listened because I couldn't help it, and now you have to listen..." He glanced at me, a pleading look in his eyes. "He said that he couldn't continue with the game, that you wouldn't give up your virginity anytime soon..."

"Mary, he was gonna dump you..."

Feeling more tears run down my cheeks, my sobs became louder, my makeup surely messed up all over my face.

It's not true. I forced myself to believe.

"He said that you were just a nerd." His voice was so gentle as though if he spoke louder, I would crumble. "–That he would never like a girl like you." He took a step towards me, knowing that I was going to collapse any moment now. A second passed and I fell to the floor, full on crying now. I held myself.

I couldn't help but think what if this is true? The thought made me whimper and instantly, I felt two strong arms clutch me tightly.

"All I'm asking is for you to let him go. He's using you for a dare, Mary." He whispered against my forehead. "And I can't stand another day with you in the hands of a liar."

I sniffled, and I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand. Feeling Brent's grip loosen, I quickly said, "Please don't let me go." This time, I was the one who wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer. He seemed shocked at this, tensing a bit but still doing the same.

"I will never  let you go." I broke out into more sobs, and due to the wet cheek pressed against my face, I knew that he was crying as well.

I believe him.
