It felt weird. Not just to sit with someone during lunch, or to talk to someone, but because it was Daniel. Daniel Smith.
"I'd like to say sorry."
He said, setting his tray of school mush down.
"For what?"
I asked, still afraid of looking in his eyes.
"For not coming back after a couple years."
I coughed on my pizza.
"You remember that?"
I asked. His smile answered.
"Yeah. I remember a lot about child hood. Playing soccer with you. Winning."
He smirked. I rolled my eyes but smiled slightly.
"Do you still play?"
I asked.
"Yeah. Got a lot better too."
"The school has a team you can join."
He nodded.
"I might. But you- Do you play baseball still?"
I looked down at my tray. Suddenly embarrassed.
"No. I stopped playing three years after you left. When I came to terms wit the fact that...that you weren't coming back."
It was his turn to look away.
"I'm sorry. But hey- I'm back now! And I'm keeping my promises from now on."
"Really?"
I raised an eyebrow.
"Yup."
He nodded.
"I'm staying your best friend forever."
I let the corners of my mouth twitched into a smile. Then someone else came and sat down across from me. I looked up.
"Kelsy."
I heard myself croak out. Annoyance bleeding out.
"Hi sweet-heart!"
She said cheerfully. I raised an eyebrow.
"Spray too much hairspray this morning? You okay?"
I asked.
"Oh Walter you're so funny!"
She cheered.
"You never told me you had such a cute friend, Walty."
"Walty?"
"Haha!"
She scooted over closer to Daniel.
"When did you plan on telling me?"
I rolled my eyes.
"Go away, you fake bitch."
I barked. She looked at me wide eyed. Anger filling her blood, she dropped her act.
"Wow, you scank ass emo-whore! I try to be nice to you and you call me fake? Why don't you just go and kill yourself already!"
My heart skipped a beat. It wasn't the first time someone told me that- wont be the last either. But it felt more embarrassing with Daniel around. I sank back on the bench as looked down.
"Ugh. Anyway, Daniel-"
I heard the sickening sound of flesh hitting flesh, and looked up. Kelsy's long brown hair spread across her face, cheek red. Daniel's hand in the air.
