School days carried on, and slowly started to get better. Daniel and I hung out a lot, it's been three weeks sense he arrived back home. He likes to hang out at my house, because he says it makes him feel more at ease then when he's home. So- I haven't been to his house yet. Which only bothered me a little when he told me no to going over. But as long as he was here it was okay.
I even started to get higher grades. I hang out with Rose a lot more. Today after school, actually, Daniel and I planned to take her out to one of the near by parks. She was still an innocent child. She needed to play around. You know, before life bites her ass.
I stepped out of the cool school building and out into the humid early summer air. I took a deep breath and smiled. To my left, I heard a few girls giggle. I looked over curiously. They were staring at me.
"Uh..Can I...Help you?"
I asked, raising an eyebrow. The shorter of the two girls blushed and looked at her shoes. The taller one smiled at me.
"We just never saw you smile before, Walter. It's cute."
I smiled slightly. Letting out a little laugh.
"Really? Thanks. You guys are cute too."
They started to giggle again and I smiled at myself as I walked down the sidewalk along side the school towards my bus. I saw Daniel standing by the open bus doors, taking with the girl again. Katie. I walked up and felt a..different aura around them.
"Hey."
I called, starting to feel awkward.
"What's up?"
"Oh hey!"
Katie turned and smile at me. Daniel smiled too.
"Hey, Walter. You remember Katie- right?"
I shrugged.
"How could I forget. She's always with you."
I pushed a smile. They both laughed a little under there breaths.
"Yeah well."
Daniel smiled softly.
"Oh yeah hey, come around three an we can head over to the park after some snacks. My dad just-"
"Oh shoot!"
Daniel cut me off, slapping his forehead with his palm and looking distressed.
"Wh-What?"
I asked, slightly worried. Katie gave me a slight smile.
"Sorry, did you guys have plans? Daniel and I were gonna go on a date this afternoon."
I felt my heart get swallowed up in my chest and the air I was sucking in be ripped away from me. I almost fell. Date?
"Da-Date?"
I mumbled.
"Yeah, silly. When a guy and a girl-"
She started to explain and I cut her off, suddenly annoyed.
"I know what a date it. I'm not stupid."
I spat at her. She looked slightly hurt but let it drop.
"No, of course not. I was just.."
Her voice trailed off. I dismissed her existence and looked at Daniel. A bit of anger, confusion and sadness draining from my mini-glare.
"Walter I-"
"Tsk."
I rolled my eyes and walked past them. Shoving them slightly out of my way as I climbed the stairs into the cold metal bus. I heard them mumble something and then Daniel climbed on. He went to sit by me and I stood up. He looked at me confused.
