Daniel slid into his chair next to mine. Memories flooded my head. He always sat on my left as a child, his body fit next to mine in some weird way.
"So Daniel!"
My dad smiled brightly at him.
"Yes, sir?"
"How have you been!"
He picked up his fork, and brought a piece of chicken to his mouth. Excitedly awaiting an answer.
"I've been good. I've heard some about your life the past few years."
There was an edge to Daniel's tone. I knew what he was hinting at and I knew it wouldn't end nicely if he kept it up. I nudged him with my elbow. Hopefully showing him he should shut up. He looked down into my eyes and I glared slightly up at him. His gaze softened and I think he nodded a bit.
"Sorry."
He smiled, obviously falsely, at my dad. Who didn't seem to notice.
"I heard you came back alone. Why is that?"
"Mom and dad didn't want to move, they really liked there life there I guess."
"And you didn't?"
"Well, actually, sir. I came back for Walter. I made a promise I needed to keep."
My dad snorted, almost choking on his food.
"You came back for Walter? Walter Carles? My worthless, good for nothin' son?"
"Dad.."
Rose whispered, becoming uncomfortable.
"What promise did you make to him that was so important?"
Daniel's hand clenched around his fork and I reached up to grab his hand, afraid of what he might do.
"Hey, Walter! Get you dirty gay hands off him."
My dad called out, making me jump. I withdrew my hand and placed them in my lap. I stared at my shaking hands, waiting for Hell to break loose.
"So-Sorry."
I mumbled, feeling my face go red.
"Sorry?"
My dad grumbled.
"Sorry for what? Being you? Being gay? Being the reason for everyone's pain? You made poor Daniel leave his home!"
I started to shake slightly.
"Dad.."
Rose tried again.
"You god damn, good for nothing family ruiner!"
He stood up fast, I heard his chair fall back. His can of Budlight fell off the table, the bubbles bursting on the hard wood. I heard wind zip past his hand as he raised it to hit me, I braced myself. Then just as my hair moved from the gust of air his hand caused- another chair flew back. I looked up in shock.
Daniel had stood up, and grabbed my dads hand. There gazes locked. Daniel's beautiful hazel eyes where filled with something I didn't ever expect to see on him.
Hatred.
"What do you think you are doing?"
Daniel's voice was extremely low pitched. Pure venom oozing with every word. My dad actually looked slightly afraid for a second.
"Don't hit him."
"Now- Don't you tell me i'm doing wrong, boy! He's my son, I have to teach him my way!"
