Roxy and I had some pancakes in the kitchen with the dogs.
"I might take Rusty back home," Roxy told me. I nodded.
"I've been thinking that maybe we could train Diamond to do some harder stuff," She said, as she put her jacket back on.
"Yeah," I nodded, putting the dishes into the sink. "What sort of stuff?"
"Maybe to pull a sledge?" Roxy smiled. I thought for a minute.
"I have a toboggan that we could get her to pull to start off," I smiled back.
"Good. We could meet tomorrow," Roxy told me "Where?"
"You could come here at about ten?" I asked.
"Yeah, sure. Come on, Rusty," Roxy called before turning around. "I'll see you tomorrow, Adam,"
"Okay, bye!" I smiled. I was tired and decided to go to bed early. "Come on, Diamond," I made my way up the stairs. In the morning, I woke up and went on a search of an old toboggan and dog harness. I got changed as fast as I could and went downstairs with Diamond. Jack and Ace followed us.
"Here you go..." I poured dog food into bowls. The three of them began to eat while I pulled on my jacket. I went outside to feed the other dogs.
When I was done, I opened up the shed. I coughed at the dust and searched around the place. I found a plastic toboggan under a dusty sheet.
"Now, to find a dog harness," I started to wander around. On the wall hung the sled dogs harness, each one with a name plate matching the dog that wore them.
Scarlett, Storm, Nikki, North, Angel, Ajax, Maxx and Minx.
Under a shelf, at the back of the shed, were a couple of plastic boxes. They each had the name of a former sled dog written on them. I kneeled down and read them all aloud.
"Jack, Honey, Ace..." I pulled his box closer to me and opened it up. I pulled an old harness and two tug-lines.
I went back inside and put Diamond's lead on.
"Now, this is a harness. It's not scary, I promise," I tried to reassure Diamond as I slipped the harness over her head and pushed her legs through the leg holes. I checked to make sure that was all alright and picked up the toboggan and tug-lines. "Let's go..."
As I walked, I began to wonder. I wonder if it would be hard to teach Diamond how to pull a sledge or follow commands. I wonder about is ever even get her to pull a real sledge. She was hard to train but Roxy seemed to know what she was doing and, well, I did have dog sled racing blood, right? The more I thought about it, the more excited I got. Finally, I meet with Roxy, in the usual place.
"Hi," She smiled.
"Hiya," I placed the toboggan down on the ground.
"Ready for our first dog sled lesson?" She asked, jokingly.
"Ready as I'll ever be!" I laughed.
