The race was fast approaching and I know what I had to do. It was now or never.
I had secretly hidden Ace's harness and tug-lines in my room, under my bed along with an old supply kit I found in the shed. The day of the race finally arrived and I went out in the shed to take my Mum's old sled, formerly belonging to her father, my Grandfather. It was dusty and old but still made a fine sled.
I clipped the tug-lines onto the front of the sled and throw them back into the sled's basket. Diamond was waiting in my room, harness already on.
"Where are you going with that sled?" My mother appeared behind me.
"I..." I paused before turning around. "I'm entering the annual sled dog race,"
"No, you're not," Lani replied, bluntly.
"Yes, I am. And, nobody, not even you, can stop me-" I grabbed the handles of the sled and pushed it over to the gate. I opened the latch and pushed the sled through. My mum didn't say another word. I knew I had won.The race wasn't far away. It started and finished in the centre of Grayling. After I closed the gate, I pushed the sled over to the front door. I opened the door and looked up the stairs.
"Diamond!" I called. The red and white husky dog bounded down the stairs and towards me. "Come here," I kneeled down beside the sled and got about attracting the tug-lines to Diamond's harness. I picked up my sled bag, which I had left in the porch, and threw it into the sled's basket.
There was no time to spare. I stood on the sled's runners and urged Diamond on. I rode the sled over to the start of race.
"Name?" Asked a man with a clip board when I stopped the sled at the starting line.
"Adam Eldon," I replied.
"With Red Diamond?" The man questioned.
"Yeah," I nodded and he moved onto the next sledder. I looked across the crowd, all the people held back by tape at the side of the race track. I could see Roxy, her purple hair making her stand out. As I looked closer, I could see my mum and dad join the crowd. I smiled and ready myself for the gun-shot.
