We travelled along the side of the mountain, along the cliff-side path. I had a two teams behind me and team in front of me. I couldn't over take them; the path was too narrow. The cliff-side levelled out and the path continued into the forest's clearing.
"Hike! Hike!" I called out to Diamond. She started to sprint, paws pounding across the snow. The team up ahead had a man steering a Mackenzie River Husky. The long-haired grey dog turned to see Diamond on his left. Their eyes meet and suddenly it became a competition.
"Hike! Hike!" I yelled again. The other man encouraged his dog on too. The end of the clearing was fast approaching and there was only room for one sled on the path up ahead.
"Hike! Hike, Diamond!" I called again. Diamond sprang into action. She had overtaken the dog but the sled hadn't past the other team yet. The path was about to start and,if Diamond didn't slow down, we were going to run up the bank and go off path.
"Diamond, easy!" I shouted "Whoa-!" I yelled as Diamond jumped up the bank and down in front of the other sled. The runners of my sled went flying over the bank and thudded down on the path in front of the team we had overtaken. I smiled; this was perfect.
We kept going until the end of the path. The sled runners skidded across the ground as stopped the sled. I looked down. Ice. The team behind me overtook us and began to skate across the frozen lake. I shook my head. It wasn't worth the risk.
"Hike, hike, Diamond! Gee!" I called and Diamond pulled to the right. We went onto the path around the lake instead.
