"He asked you out?"

Glancing to my right, I watched as Gabriel's eyebrows rose up until they disappeared under his blonde hair. We were sitting under a giant oak tree close to school. Summer vacation ended today, meaning my sophomore year would officially start tomorrow. Gabriel would be starting his junior year, meaning he would be one year closer to leaving me alone in that school.

"Yeah," I quietly said while twiddling my thumbs. The warm August breeze was swishing my hair around my shoulders as I sat in the grass.

"And you said no?" His angelic face was looking quite perplexed as he sat Indian style in front of me, music playing from his phone next to us.

Sighing, I fell backwards onto the ground to stare up at the bright blue sky. "I just... it's weird. I get tingly whenever I'm around him but I still don't understand why he'd want to be with me."

Gabriel leaned onto his back beside me, his icy blue eyes staring at me. "Maybe he thinks you're an amazing person, like the rest of the world."

Rolling my eyes, I stared at a fluffy cloud high above our heads. "He's just... he just seems too good to be true, you know?"

Looking to my left I watched as Gabriel leaned on his elbow and leaned his head onto his hand. "But maybe he isn't. From what you've told me he's a little whoreish but there's nothing wrong with that. But he seems like he'd be willing to give all of that up, for you. You have to realize how special you are Cleo."

I turned away from him, a weird feeling in my stomach. No one in sixteen years had ever called me special. It was so strange to be around people who were so nice to me, and actually smiled at me. Now here I was, with a great guy next to me and two people at home who actually cared about me. It all seemed too good to be true.

"I guess," I said before turning back to him and giving him a small smile. "Are you ready for school tomorrow?"

He groaned before dramatically flopping onto his back. "Hell no. If I could just skip these last two years that would be great."

"You could always fail your senior year so you can stay with me."

He chuckled before turning back towards me, his hair falling into his face. "I'll never leave you Cleo; I'll always be here for you. Always. I'll be that one loud guy at your graduation who is cheering you on."

I laughed as I tucked my hair behind my ears. "I'll be expecting that." My eyes slowly closed as Gabriel's soft voice started singing along to a Beatles song, just another thing we have in common.

Before I knew it I was drifting off into a dreamless sleep. By the time my eyes reopened the sun was lower than it was before. Looking to my left I saw Gabriel still lying on his back, thumping his fingers along to the music that was still playing. Checking the time on my phone, my eyes widened when I realized it was almost five.

"Hey sleeping beauty."

I smiled up at Gabriel, who was smiling down at me. With the setting sun behind him, he truly looked like an angel. How was he my friend? Everything in my life seemed too good to be true.

"Why didn't you wake me?" I asked while sitting up and rubbing my tired eyes.

He shrugged while sitting up and turning his music down a little. "You seemed really tired. I figured you'd like to get a little bit more sleep before school starts tomorrow. And don't worry; I wouldn't let anyone bug you while you slept."
