My eyes took in the large, and pretty creepy, building the bus was pulling up to. All of the health classes took a trip to a house, the school wanting kids to realize that mental illnesses are something that need to be taken seriously. Even though the entire sophomore class was going, some juniors were going as well, which made me happy, because that meant Gabriel was able to go with me.
"I know that the people here aren't exactly like us," Gabriel said while frowning up at the house. "But this house doesn't have to look quite so creepy."
"They could put some flowers in or something," I said as the bus came to a complete stop. "These people deserve the same treatment that anyone else would get."
We remained silent as we followed the rest of our classmates into the large house. As different nurses were talking about what to expect, my eyes zeroed in on Athena standing by the wall. She was smiling at everyone, until she spotted me. Her smile instantly faded, a mean look crossing her face. What did I ever do to you? I thought while shrinking closer to Gabriel, who put a comforting arm around my body.
When the nurses were done explaining everything that would be happening, we started getting separated into groups. My heart sunk when Athena suddenly walked towards us. Great.
"Hello," she said with a barely there smile.
"Athena right?" Gabriel said with his signature smile. "Nice to see you again, I didn't know you worked here."
Athena gave him a full out smile as she said, "I volunteer here. I'll be working with you two today; we're going to be talking with a man named Pete. Now something you should know is Pete has a very severe case of multiple personality disorder. That other personality's name is Reno, and he is completely different than Pete. Don't freak out if he happens to show up while we're there, just stay calm. Okay?"
We nodded before following Athena up a creepy staircase. She then stopped in front of a door, giving it a soft knock. "Is Pete there?"
"Hi Athena!" A voice said from the other side of the door.
Athena then took a ring of keys out of her pocket and started unlocking the door. They lock the door? I thought, absolutely mortified. I turned towards Gabriel, who looked exactly as I felt.
When the door opened, Athena ushered us inside before shutting the door. I saw a guy around our age sitting on the bed, his face buried in a book. He looked up, his chocolatey brown eyes looking so calm and gentle it upset me even more that he was locked in a room. He had long black hair that was currently sitting on top of his head. He was also wearing a plain blue tee shirt, which seemed to be a few sizes too big. His legs were covered in a pair of black sweats, as his feet were covered in a pair of bright orange fuzzy socks. After he moved the book from his face, I was able to see he was reading To Kill a Mockingbird.
"Pete, this is Cleo and Gabriel. They're going to be spending some time with you today," Athena's calm voice said in the quiet room.
Giving him a big smile, I turned to Gabriel to see he seemed to be in a trance. He was looking at Pete as if he was the greatest treasure he had ever seen. Nudging him with my elbow, he looked down at me before shaking his head a little. "It's really nice to meet you," Gabriel said while giving Pete a big smile.
Pete, however, wasn't looking up at him. He was still reading his book, which he seemed to be enjoying very much. "I'm not sure why you would want to hang out with me," he said as he turned a page. "I'm not the most fun person to be with."
