I followed Marissa up the stairs, Cameron and Lindsay in front of me and Natalie next to me. I can't believe those silly spells actually worked to get rid of the evil spirit, I can't believe it. We walked out of the basement and into the living room where we were able to see the open door in the front of the house. It was good to feel the warm fall breeze. I smiled at the sight of it. We were free. My friends grabbed their things that they had brought with them when we first arived. I felt like we'd been in there for weeks. Finally we got back into or cars and drove quickly to the hospital, as before, Cameron and Natalie with me. I flipped on the radio to clear the silence, none of us knew what to say. We then pulled into the big, white hospital, I ran to Marissa who was driving Sam's car, to help her bring him in. I grabbed his right arm and Marissa grabbed the other. It was early in the morning right now, it was just getting light out. Sunrise. Marissa and I rushed Samuel inside, everyone else running behind us. The nurses hurried to us as soon as they saw Sam and helped him onto a gurney. They layed him face down to keep from hurting the cuts in his back. Marissa followed the nurses and Sam to the hospital room and I went back to the waiting room. The room was set up with yellow chairs ligned along the walls and a mahogany coffee table in the middle. My friends filled the chairs. Bryce, Mckynleigh and Hannah on one side, both girls on the phone with most likley their parents. On the opposite side sat Cameron and Lindsay, Lindsay just sat there, puzzled and still in shock, clinging to Cameron's arm. As usual. Cameron was holding Lindsay tightly and texiting furiously with his left hand. Then, Natalie sat in a chair at the end of the small room with her feet crossed on the coffee table. I walked over and sat next to her. She wiped her strawberry-blonde curls out of her face and smiled at me. I returned the smile, that was all anyone could really do. We had nothing else to say. I started biting my nails nervously. What if Sam does die...? I hadn't even thought about it. Marissa would never be able to live with herself. Samuel is a great friend, it would be a horrible tradgedy to loose him. The hospital doors suddenly burst open and Samuel's parents stammered through the door, horrified looks on their faces. Then came his 14 year old sister Grace carrying his baby brother Matthew. She nodded at us when she realized us all staring. I felt horrible for the family. Marissa must've called then when she got to the hospital room. We all finally had service here. After about a half an hour of complete silence, despite the nurses at the desk gabbing on and on about the one blonde nurse's wedding this week, and where they'd get their nails done and hair and such, Marissa walked in, blank faced and staring at the ground.
"Lexi's family came and got her, they were blessed to find that she was still alive. And it was good to see my Aunt and Uncle again." She said, completly ignoring the whole Samuel issue. She walked over and sat next to Natalie.
"Great. So...what's going on with Sam?" Lindsay asked slowly, her voice full of worry.
"I dont know! Why don't you do us all a favor Lindsay and mind your own f***ing buissiness!" Marissa snapped. Marissa never talked like that! Never! She then tilted her head down and swoosh her water bottle back and forth, making it go from side to side. Lindsay looked at Natalie and I with a ' What did I do?!' kind of look. I shook my head. Everyone stared at the ceiling or the floor, afraid to make eye contact with Marissa. A doctor dressed in all white and sea-foam green then walked in. Everyone sat up in their chairs, both eager and scared for what he would tell us, because obviously Marissa doesn't know yet either.
"May I speak with you kids in the hallway?" He asked. We all stood up and formed a little huddle-type thing in the hallway. "The good news is," Dr.Kane started. "Your friend Samuel is going to be alright." We all then sighed a huge feeling of relief, especially Marissa. I knew this was hard on her. " He still has a minor concussion due to his head hitting the concrete and a broken arm, but nothing too serious. He will need a lot of assistance for the next 2-4 weeks. I suggest each of you take your turns visiting him after school everyday to teach him what he will be missing in class, if that's not too much of a problem. If he starts feeling dizzy or begins puking constantly or even if the pain gets bad I want you to bring him to see me. Okay?" We all nodded.
