3561 divided by 679049 times 54 minus 29.. My brain felt cluttered. I couldn’t focus on math when I have so much more to focus on. I looked towards Damian who was now sprawled out on my bed, inspecting the letter pictures that we’d found in our lockers earlier today. He looked confused. I chucked my math book behind me and stood up from the woolen couch that sat in the corner of my room. I walked slowly and heavily to the bed, stomping my feet to a beat almost. I flicked off the bright light of my room and climbed into the bed next to my best friend. Damian pulled the blankets over himself and set the papers he was previously inspecting on the red bedside table. I stared towards the unseen ceiling. My room was pitch black, despite the faint, yellow light of the full moon, shinning through the crack of my curtains. I closed my eyes and tried to let sleep take me. It didn’t work. I just lay there, playing with my reddish-blonde hair. I can’t stop thinking that the letters have something to do with what went on at Degriest Hill.. We’d all been trying to forget about that and go on with our normal lives, but I was starting to believe that maybe forgetting about it and not speaking of it again wasn’t the best solution. We were full of wonder still.. Wondering about Terrence, Lexi, Sam, Marissa, everything. Looking for explanations. I wondered how everyone else was really feeling about what happened. I knew that I was still terrified. I know we’d gotten rid of Terrence, but still, they’re’s always that ‘what if’ factor included. Damian groaned and flipped himself over to look at me.
“Cam?” He asked. I continued to stare at the black ceiling.
“Yeah?”
“I’m nervous..” He said, his voice shaky.
“Why? Uh. Damian freaking McGinty.. You’ll do fine in the game tomorrow, you’re one of our best players. Don’t stress about the dance either, Natalie likes you, and that’s why she’s going with you. Just try to chill.”
Damian chuckled and then went silent for a few seconds.
“Uhh, no. Not about that.” He started slowly, I looked at him confused and he went on. “I think I know what the letters mean.” I waited for him to go on. The rest of our friends had come over earlier after we heard that they found letters too. Damian hadn’t taken his eyes off unscrambling them since then. Damian handed me the paper where he’d constructed the letters. I looked to the top of the paper where he’d written in his messy handwriting what each of us had gotten for letters.
IT-- Me
NE--Damian
R--Natalie
R--Lindsay
O--Bryce
‘S--Mckynleigh
VE--Samuel
VE--Marissa
I looked up at him, this paper in front of me with letters everywhere not giving me a clue what it meant. He rolled his eyes and handed me another paper. I scanned it, reading the words over and over again in my head.
“It’s never over”
The words just didn’t register in my mind. I looked at Damian.
“Dame, wha..” I started but was interupted by my Irish best friend.
“I don’t know, Cam. I don’t know.” He said, anxiously biting his fingernails.
“Should we tell the others?” I asked. Damian nodded, not looking me in the eyes.
“Go to bed, Cameron.. We’ll talk about it in the morning.” He told me, his voice unusually flat. Damian flipped back over and I did the same. I wondered why Damian was acting like this. I wondered what “It’s never over” means. I tried not to think about it, it would only be bad thoughts. I remembered then that since I’ve known Damian, he doesn’t like to show fear, even in front of his best friends. It really bothers him. That’s why he was acting like this. Poor lad is terrified. I heard him sniff from the opposite side of the bed. I cleared my throat and spoke quietly.
“I’m scared too y’know.” I told him.
“I know.” He studdered.
“Night Damo.”
“Night, Cam.”
And with that. I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
