Arabella was dying.
But that was okay.
She looked over into the distance and saw everyone smiling. Exhausted, bloody and surrounded by destruction, but still smiling. They made it. The war was won.
And Arabella was dying.
But that was okay.
Clutching her stomach wound, she started taking steps backwards. Every step made her wince, but she went on anyway.
It'd be best if everyone just forgot about her.
It'd be best if she and the memory of her dissipated out of existence. That would hurt them all the least, wouldn't it? Besides, she didn't have much of a choice.
Because Arabella was dying.
But that was okay.
Arabella understood why she called all those people her friends. Aphmau, Garroth, Laurance, Katelyn, Travis, Aaron, Vylad--they were all there for her. Even if she didn't know or realise it, they were all there for her.
They tried to help her out when she started going mad. They still had faith in her.
They did care about her.
Arabella was the one who didn't care about them. Until now, at least. But that didn't matter anymore.
Because Arabella was dying.
But that was okay.
She looked at Laurance. His lips were locked with Aphmau's, hands on her waist, enjoying their happy and tender moment.
Those two finally got their happy ending, and they deserved it.
Aphmau especially deserved it. With everything she'd been through, it was amazing how she wasn't the one who went insane. Despite everything, she still held on. Despite everything, she still stood strong. Whether or not she was Irene's descendant, she made the world a better place.
Laurance definitely deserved her, as she did him. They'd been at each other's sides through thick and thin. Laurance had even confessed his love for Aphmau the day they met!
What a casanova. He was Arabella's favourite casanova.
Seeing how happy they were together made Arabella feel contented. No more envy, no more bitter jealousy. Arabella was happy for them. After all, she could no longer come in between them, and they could live their happy ever after.
Because Arabella was dying.
But that was okay.
Arabella had become a Shadow Knight. Creatures that everyone despises, and if they don't loathe them, they fear them.
They were merciless bringers of destruction to the world. Arabella didn't want that.
Funnily enough, Arabella had been trying the become a Shadow Knight from the beginning, but as soon as she stopped wanting it, she started to become one. And now, she was one of them.
That didn't matter to her, though. Even though she was a Shadow Knight, she was still herself.
She was still Arabella.
Besides, she'd never be able to be driven to what a Shadow Knight actually was. She had no time left.
Because Arabella was dying.
But that was okay.
The back of her head starting throbbing wildly as if it had been stabbed multiple times. Which it probably had been. She couldn't remember because she'd just been stabbed multiple times.
Arabella had already lost too much blood, and she was starting to feel faint.
She was definitely dying.
But that was okay.
Arabella started walking away from the crowd of people. She began walking towards the unoccupied forest. If she left right now, maybe no one would notice her disappear forever. Maybe it wouldn't be hard on anyone.
Unfortunately, as soon as Laurance broke away from Aphmau, he noticed Arabella trying to get away. He knew exactly what was going on and went after her.
Arabella had already ventured far enough into the woods. With little to no energy left, she could barely walk and collapsed onto the grassy floor, her back against the bark of a tree.
This whole ordeal would be slow.
It'd definitely be painful.
But it was also peaceful.
Arabella shut her eyes for the last time.
"Arabella!"
Nevermind. Arabella started looking around for the source of the voice. She recognised the voice immediately.
Then came Laurance bounding into her sight. Upon noticing her, he rushed to her, horrorstruck.
"Hey," said Arabella weakly.
"Don't do this to me," muttered Laurance with a hint of desperation in his voice. "Don't you dare do this to me now, Arabella. Please."
"It's okay," whispered Arabella.
"No, Ar, it's not okay." Laurance's voice was breaking. "Look, we can quickly get you to Aphmau, and she can heal you and--"
"She can't." Arabella interrupted Laurance. She put on a weak smile anyway. "I've evaded death too many times because I didn't accept the fact I'd be gone. I should've died and stayed dead the first time in Irene's dimension. In fact, I should've been dead long before I reached Phoenix Drop, burnt in that fire in my old village--"
"Don't say that." Laurance's eyes were watering. "Please don't say that. There's still time."
Arabella's hand reached out for Laurance's. He gripped hers tight. Despite what Laurance was saying, even he knew the truth.
"I can finally accept the fact I'll be dead," continued Arabella, "and I need you to do the same for my sake. I--I can't bear seeing you like this." Seeing as Laurance said nothing, Arabella bit her already bleeding lip. "It's alright, Laurance. At least I'm still myself. We both are. We aren't Shadow Knights. We've just got a little dark part about us, and doesn't everybody? Besides, I'll--I'll die a hero's death."
That wasn't true. Arabella had never been a hero. She'd been nothing more than the villain of her own story.
Her death would mean everyone else gets a happy ever after.
That's what Arabella wanted--for everyone else to be happy.
If she died, it would be her own happy ever after, too.
It all worked out in the end, right?
The two of them sat in silence. Arabella's vision began to blur even more. "I'm happy how things turned out for you."
"Arabella," muttered Laurance.
"It's okay," she said again. "It's okay, Laurance. I'm okay, you're okay, it's all okay."
"Don't leave me." Laurance's voice completely broke.
"It's okay," whispered Arabella.
Her grip on Laurance's hand weakened. The light left her eyes, dissipating slowly but surely until all she was was an empty shell. She slumped over and Laurance immediately caught her.
Laurance couldn't feel her pulse.
Laurance couldn't hear her heart beat.
Her eyes were lifeless.
Arabella was dead.
But that was okay.
Everyone was okay.
Arabella was okay.
