You have to do your best, and whatever your best is will be enough for you. You can always try to improve whatever your "best" is. You could not try enough at doing something because you don't care, or you could give it your all and accept what happens. There is always room to get better at something, but you don't always have to. If you don't see a need or feel you want to improve something then it won't happen. If no one can truly force one person to do anything, said person has to want to change.
If you are struggling with something, anything at all, you have to decide a few things. "Is this important enough to me or to my life or future to spend time doing it?" "How do I get better?" "Will this help me in any way?". A lot of math "skills" that I'm learning right now, I won't ever use. It will look better on my resume to say "completed advanced math from middle school through college" and that will just give me a little more edge to my dream career. If I start struggling with my math, I ask help from teachers or other humans that know it, if that doesn't work I use a textbook or the internet.
