The front door to the house opened and then slammed shut. "Eliza!" Alexander shouted his wife's name, dropping his bag. Having just been sent home by General Washington, he was tired from commands but upmost pleased to be able to see his wife again.
Running a hand through his hair, he turned and took a look at himself in the mirror opposite of the door. His reflection stared back at him, and feeling almost intimidated by himself, he straightened up.
From another room in the house, there was the sound of some muffled noises and the door opened. Eliza appeared in the hall, her hair still falling the same way it did over her shoulders, and her face glowing.
Alexander stepped forward and said, "Eli-" He abruptly stopped when his wife turned. His breath was taken away, as he saw her in front of him again for the first time in months. As he observed her, unable to say anything, his eyes fell upon her stomach.
Eliza placed a hand on top of her stomach, smiling at her husband. Heart beating with energy, he rushed to her, placing his hands on either side of her face gently. Both of them leaned in to each other to kiss.
When they pulled apart, Alexander looked down upon her stomach. "Eliza..." She beamed as he murmured, "Are you..."
Placing a hand on his cheek, she nodded before saying, "Yes."
Alexander gasped and hugged his wife. "How long have you known?" Teary eyed and overwhelmed, he ran his fingers through her hair. Eliza accepted the embrace and paused before saying, "A month..."
Pulling away from the embrace, he hesitated before putting both his hands on her slightly larger stomach. "Eliza, you should have told me." Tucking a piece of hair behind her ear, she chuckled. "I sent a letter to the General-"
Something flashed across his eyes that made Eliza pause mid sentence. "But you're here now, darling. To meet your..." Alexander looked up, biting his lip, anticipating the news of his child. "Son."
A tear traced down his cheek, as Alexander gasped, "Eliza!" She couldn't contain herself and she laughed along in excitement with him.
Intertwining his hands with his wife's, he took a few breaths before saying as calmly as he could, "I'm really going to be a father?" Eliza nodded a couple of times, letting herself fall into his arms. Both of them sighed, swaying back and forth on their feet.
Alexander couldn't believe it. He was going to be a father. Shutting his eyes, and stroking his wife's hair, he let out a long sigh. To be able to raise a child with the woman he loved was more than he could ask for.
Growing up without a father, Alexander didn't want his future son to go through the pain and loss he had felt for days on end. He promised himself that he would be there for his son, seeing his first steps, hearing his first words, every bit of it.
Pressing his lips tightly together, he looked down at Eliza, who had her head close to his chest. He could feel her stomach against his, rising and falling. Every breath she took engulfed his senses, making him remind himself that she was now carrying their son.
"Eliza," he said. She looked up, her eyes gleaming with happiness. "Yes?"
The floorboards creaked underneath their feet as they shifted their footing. Alexander put one hand on her back, while using the other to gently place on her stomach. Eliza didn't need to hear the words to know what he wanted to say to her.
A few tears trickled down Alexander's cheeks, and he managed to say, "You should have told me sooner. What if I am unable to provide for yourself and this child?"
Feeling his sudden change in attitude, Eliza shushed him. "Alexander, we don't need to worry about money. I know how devoted you are to your work and looking after my well being. But you needn't worry about myself and this child while you're away."
He ducked his head down, unable to make eye contact with her. "But what if-"
Eliza lifted his head up again. "We shouldn't think of the possibilities that you and I both know are capable of happening with this revolution." She gulped, gripping his arm. "We are going to have a child, Alexander. Let's take our time with that first, shall we?"
Alexander looked as though he wanted to say something else, but he thought better. "I'm sorry, Eliza." Eliza smiled a bit at his flustered apology. "You shouldn't be apologizing."
Not wanting to let the moment drift away, she cleared her throat and said, "We have so much to talk about. I mean, of course, besides the fact that I am carrying our son." She smiled up at him.
"Shall we take this conversation into the living room?" At his request, Eliza beamed, nodding her head. "That'd be wonderful." He leaned down again and kissed her, this time on her lips. Eliza's heart pounded, and she felt her stomach flip, maybe from the lovesick feeling or the child within.
Taking her hand, Alexander led Eliza down the hall, supporting her every move. Eliza thought it was kind of him to be at her side, making sure she was getting along. It was comforting to know that he'd be there to help her throughout her pregnancy, being the father he was meant to be.
Alexander looked at his wife, thinking to himself how beautiful she was, and how lucky he was to have the opportunity to raise a child with her. "I love you," he said into her ear.
Eliza stopped walking to turn her head just enough to see her husband's face. She smiled before saying, "I love you too."
Each step they took seemed to be the steps to something new. And only in a few months time, their child would be born and that something new would be a part of their lives in a bigger way than they even knew.
. . . . . . . . . .
A/N: I wrote this for Alexander and Eliza's relationship is amazing in so many ways, and the idea of Alexander coming home and hearing from Eliza that he would be a father just needed to be done.
