Weddings could be the most wonderful day of someone's life, but also the worst for their siblings. That certainly applied to one specific person, who found herself at the third wedding among the family. Peggy was completely tired of standing around and holding flowers, watching her sisters and brother fall in love.

When was it her turn to find someone? She crushed the flower bouquet in her hand, staring at Eliza and her new husband. They looked very pleased with one another and truly in love. The wedding was the same deal, relatives asking about her life, people trying to dance with her, siblings being overly excited about everything, all of it.

Peggy placed the slightly crushed bouquet on the table behind her, sighing deeply. The sound of exasperation came out a little louder than she expected. She was startled by the sudden voice beside her.

"Don't like weddings?"

Rolling her eyes, she flipped a glance to the person next to her. Whoa, a voice in her head gasped. It must have been one of her sister's husbands friends, because she had never seen him in her life. Her mouth hung open as she looked him up and down.

He definitely had to be the most handsome man she'd ever seen. And he actually started a conversation with her. Peggy always was the one to strike up conversations. Not the men she took interest in. "Not much. Been to my fair share of them. I haven't even had my own yet, so I'm tired of seeing my siblings-"

"Ah, so you're a Schuyler?" The man's voice was low and sharp, but his eyes gleamed with a particular brightness.

"Margarita, as they call me. I'd rather you call me Peggy, sir." She twisted a piece of her hair nervously, biting her lip. It had been so long since she felt the stomach turning, butterfly spinning sensations within her.

He chuckled, leaning a little closer. His head briefly brushed against hers as he nodded out to the couple in the center of attention. "Your sister, the lovely Eliza, I presume?" Peggy nodded politely in return.

The man knowingly smiled. "John Laurens. I'm close to the groom." Peggy glanced out at her sister's husband and then back at the man beside her. Quite similar in appearance, she could tell how they'd get along well.

"So you've been on the battlefield?"

"It would be tragic to find myself physically on the field," John started jokingly, thankfully receiving a laugh from her, "But indeed I have spent quite some time in battle. I'll do what it takes to keep this country and our pride safe."

Peggy already knew he was the one. He spoke unlike any other soldier she'd met. Instead of bragging, he took in consideration the reasons he was actually out there in the first place.

"I've overheard stories at my father's various political arrangements and it sounds terrifying out there." Her eyes shyly looked his body up and down again, before she actually met his eyes. "I pray for your future safety, sir."

John's eyes clouded over and he looked away from the sister. "It's appreciated." Firmly changing the subject, he tried to get to know her more. She couldn't understand why he suddenly sounded so threatened, but she didn't let it bother her too much.

A few hours ticked by. The newly wed couple was clearly anxious to get away from the relatives and friends surrounding them. It only made sense to speed the celebration up and move forward to the wedding dance. Both of them eagerly began to twirl around the floor, inviting others as they passed.

As they passed by, Peggy winked at her sister and received an innocent look back. She watched them dance off to another part of the dimmed room, only to see John beside her looking down at his hands. He too had exchanged a glance with one of them, but it left his face in a frown.

Peggy lifted his chin up with one finger. He looked vaguely surprised, but didn't question her action. Eyes lighting up, she glanced at the floor and then back at him. John sighed and took her hand. Dancing seemed to be something that would lift both their spirits.

Hands trembling a bit, John guided her around the floor, feeling unlike himself. He didn't seem to the type to dance often and he looked exposed to all the wealthy figures around him. Peggy noticed his nervousness and gave him a look. He nodded and whispered, "Madam," making her grin.

But that little smile of hers allowed him to remember where he was. No one was going to look back on that night, on the people in the background especially. He was wrapped up dancing with the most lovely woman and she couldn't seem to stop herself from flirting with him the whole night.

Throughout the various dances, Peggy felt her heartbeat increasing. Every touch and exchange of energy between their bodies made her more attracted and fascinated by the man beside her. He seemed to be getting very comfortable with her as well.

During one dance, with her arms wrapped around his neck, both of them swaying back and forth, Peggy glanced over at her sister and her new husband. Their lips met and she felt herself shrink deeper into Laurens. He could sense her sudden change in attitude, so he turned her attention back to him.

Face hidden in the shadows of the night, John timidly touched her cheek. Something in his eyes was telling her that he was thinking of doing something scandalous and thrilling. Her heart pounded in her chest, awaiting whatever was to come before her.

Peggy looked up at him. She whispered his name once, hissing through her teeth. John snapped back into reality, remembering his intentions. A little smile appeared, seconds before he grabbed the back of her neck and pulled her close to meet his awaiting lips.

Cheeks blushing rosy red, the youngest sister melted into his embrace. She hadn't kissed too many men before, but she definitely could confirm she wasn't too inexperienced by the way he was kissing back for more. After a few seconds of smooching, they pulled back from one another.

Breathless, he looked over at her. Peggy's eyes were wide and her cheeks stayed flushed that bright red color. She pushed a curl out of her eyes and tried to speak. How she really loved him right then.

John put one finger on her lips, cutting her off with his own speech. "Would you like to escape this scene? Continue that?" His eyebrows raised as he spoke.

What do I have to lose? Peggy glanced back at her sister, who was having a lovely time. No one was paying attention to the couple in the corner of the room. She looked back up at him and murmured, "Certainly, sir."

As the room laid their eyes on the newly wed couple, who leaned in for a kiss at the end of their dance, John took her hand in his. He ducked down and she followed suit, scurrying out of the place. Not a soul noticed their exit.

After they escaped the wedding scene, the two of them leaned collapsed against the wall in the hallway. John pressed his hand on top of hers, whispering, "One night and I'm already in love with you." Peggy let out a soft laugh.

"I'm very much in love with you," she replied, before kissing his cheek. The two of them leapt to their feet, Peggy leaning back against the wall, and John stepping close to her. He timidly leaned in and kissed her lips again.

And for the both of them, love at that moment never seemed stronger. Due to unlikely circumstances had they come in contact with one another. But due to even more unlikely situations, they confirmed that they wouldn't be walking away alone from that ball alone.
