"When I see you, I don't see you black." -Teal

While JC's on the subject about racism, I'm gonna add something real quick.(Okay, maybe not that quickly, but...)

One of the most common phrases that people use when they're trying to be nice to a black person is, "When I see you, I don't see you black."

I'm just gonna say that this doesn't really happen to me because I'm Asian. People generally don't say, "When I see you, I don't see you yellow."

But the point is, black people usually don't appreciate it. Unbelievable, huh?

No. I understand why they don't like it.

I know the phrase is probably used with good intentions, but by saying it, you're basically trying to make them feel better by saying that you don't recognize the color of their skin.

Now think about that. Like really, actually, think about it.

Ok. So what's the color of your eyes? Brown? Blue? Maybe even green?

Alright. Let's say that society is against that color of eyes. Someone wants to be nice and unperturbed by the fact that your eyes are that color. So guess what they say?

"When I see your eyes, I don't see them different from mine."

Okay. Deep breath, Teal.

Do you understand what that even means??!

It means that instead of being willing to accepting the color of your eyes, they try to deny the color!!!

But isn't that what makes you you? Isn't it the fact that we have different features that make us special? And they're just gonna deny what makes us special? That's just forcing us to pretend to be more like other people!!!

Skin color is just another feature! So why deny a feature that makes someone special? You should embrace it, not disregard it!

So peeps. Think twice before you say something to comfort someone. It might actually be offending.

Anyways...
