Chapter Three

A week later

Mom took me to the audiologist. I was sitting in the chair across from mom; just feeling anxious nervous scared. I was yearning for mom to calm me make me feel better. All she was doing was talking on her cell phone.

Moment later the doctor came out we got up and followed her to a room. It looks like an recording studio. She wrote down on a board telling me what she's gonna do and what I'm gonna have to do. I nod my head.

Went in this soundproof booth sat down she put these headphones on me and handed me a clicker. She wrote on the board and showed it to me

"Want your mom with you?"

I looked at mom, than I looked at the doctor and shook my head no and looked down at my hands. She stared at me for a moment and left on out the booth closing the door shut. Sat down at an desk. She began clicking some buttons than she spoke into the mic
"Hey, Kayla can you hear me?"
She and mom stared at me, I raised my head a bit.

"Press the button if you can hear me."

*click*

She wrote on her paper, looked at me

"Okay, we're gonna play a little game, click the button every time you hear a chirp sound and beep sound...I'm gonna play the sounds from both sides."

I took a deep breath and raise my head and stared at the dark beige wall.

"Nod if you're ready."
I nod my head, she than began playing the sounds. I clicked the button every time I heard the sounds.

She changed the volume a lot, it made me frustrated. Than she switch to my left ear, did the same thing than she switched to my right. After that she came in the booth, took the headphones off. She wrote on the board and showed it to me

"We're gonna do the same thing without the headphones, but with these."

I looked at what she was holding. They are the most weirdest looking headphones I ever seen. I raised my eyebrow as I stared at it. She smirk and wrote on the board

"I know it looks weird, it will feel uncomfortable."

I nod my head, she put it on me on side just behind my ear and the other one on the side of my temple. I made a face, it really does feel uncomfortable, hurts a bit. She looked at me and nod. I nod back

She left on out closed the door. She turn the volume up

"Can you hear me, Kayla?"

I gasp softly as I heard her. I nod my head.

"Okay, we're gonna do the same thing as before."

She began playing the sounds, she watched how I reacted moving my head around a bit as I clicked the button.

After all that I was in another room, sitting in a comfy chair. I was staring at this big picture of all these different colored hearing aid modes. Doc walked in, she began getting some stuff she took out a tube and some pink and white goo she mixed them up together.

"Its gonna feel a little cold."

I nod my head, she came and squeeze the goo in both of my ears. I shiver at the touch. Had to let it sit for a while. She wrote on the board and showed it to me

"What colors do you want your modes to be, pick three?"
I looked at her, she smiled as she hand me the board. I thought for a moment and wrote on the board

"Blue, purple and silver"

She smiled as she nod her head she wrote on a box. Than she took the harden goo out of my ears put them both in the box and closed it up. She gave me the rest of the goo from the tube I smirk as I played with it. Ended up shaping it into a cube.

"They will be ready in two weeks."

I nod my head we shook hands as we walked on out the room. She gave me a lollipop. I held the paper she gave me. As I walk into the lobby, there I saw mom talking to some guy. Standing real close to him, smiling and laughing. I slam my hand against the wall.

They both jumped a bit, looked at me. I stared at them with dead eyes, shook my head and began walking away; heading down the hall. Mom called my name as she came after me. I head on out of the main lobby with mom chasing after me. Went out the doors, making my way to the parking lot. I did a stupid thing stepping off the side walk without looking both ways. A car was pulling in fast, I saw it. Then I felt my body jerk back. It was mom she pulled me back. She turned me around and began yelling at me.

I heard half of what she said. She shook me a bit, I grunt as I jerk my body away from her

"I can't hear okay...its not my fault!" I yell

I finally spoke for the first time in a week and a half. She catching her breath.

"I can't hear!" I yell again.
My voice it sounds so different all high pitched. Mom sigh deeply she reach to touch me. I jerk away

"No!" I loudly said.
I turned looked both ways and ran to the truck. Mom paced walked to her truck. She unlocked the door, I got in the back instead of the front. Mom sigh and looked at me. I stared out the window she started the truck and pulled on out.

She drove around for a long while than she picked up some food before heading home. Parked in the little driveway. I was finna open the door til mom locked the door back. I looked at her. She stared at me, I knew what she was gonna say.

"I don't care." I said as unlocked the door and got out.
I had saw dad, he was messing around with his car. He saw me and smile. I smiled as I ran to him he held out his arms I jump in them. He held me as he spun me around. He put me down stared at me, saw how my eyes are. He made a concern look.

I just shrugged my shoulders and gave him the paper. Mom came up to us, they kissed I went in the house. Went to find Leon. He was watching TV. He saw me and held up his pinky, I locked mines with his we shook I sat down next to him.

Leon is only eight years old. We're protective of each other.
