Calum's POV

"Calum! Get off the field! Now!"

I mentally groaned as I heard my name get called.  I walked off the field as slowly as I could, trying to stall time.  I walked up to my football (soccer) coach looking down the whole time, avoiding eye contact at all costs.

"Calum, explain to me why you were late for the past three practices and didn't show up for last weeks game." Coach said, with a scowl that was quite intimidating, on his face. Time to work my magic.

"Well, you see coach, I was just at home taking care of my dog because he has been very sick lately.  I was just trying to help him as best I could."

"Oh really, what's your dogs name then?" He asked with a suggesting glare.  Clearly I was lying.  I've never had a dog once in my life, sadly, but I wanted to see how long I could  keep this up. I smirked.

"Her name is Macy, she is the cutest thing."

"She? I thought you just said your dog was a boy!" Coach was now angry and I knew I couldn't get out of this, I searched my brain for a possible explanation but it was no use.

"I I uh-"

"Save it Hood, you're suspended from the team until you learn how to own up to your mistakes. Don't try to reason with me either, I've made my decision."

I stood there with my mouth hanging wide open, with nothing left to say, for once.  I've always been a compulsive liar, ever since I was little. One time in the 8th grade I was dating this girl, but only because my friends dared me to.  I lied to her for the majority of our relationship, if you could even call it that, until she found out because one of my old friends ratted me out.  She dumped me right then and there, in addition to slapping me in the face.  Ever since then I've been lying non stop.  It's like an impulse and I can't help it. I walked home after the coach just basically threw me off the team.  I put my headphones in and looked at the ground.  The cool autumn air was blowing against my face causing my cheeks to turn red.  I looked up from the ground getting ready to cross the street when my phone got knocked out of my hand and fell onto the ground.

"Oh my god! I'm so sorry!" Was all I heard before I processed what just happened.  A girl who looked about my age, I had actually recognized her from school, she had long brown hair that went just below her shoulders, and dark brown eyes.  She was wearing a heavy jacket with mittens and a beanie, she looked really cold to say the least.  She bent down and picked up my phone that, thankfully, was shattered.  She handed it to me and gave me a sweet smile.  She got a good look at my face and it looked as if a lightbulb just popped up above her head.

"Oh Calum sorry I wasn't paying attention-" she said trying to start conversation, but honestly, I wasn't in the mood.

"Yeah whatever." Was all I said before I walked around her and left her standing there.

"Hey wait a minute, I wasn't done talking to you!" She yelled trying to get my attention, but I just kept walking.  She ran ahead of me and stopped right before me.

"What's your problem?" I ignored her again, desperate to get to my house so I can go to my room and mope.

"Just leave me alone." I said before she finally gave up and just stood there after I walked away.

"What the hell."  Was the last thing I heard her say before I put my headphones back in and walked away.  I finally recognized who she was and I honestly never thought I would ever talk to her again, but for some odd reason I kept thinking of my encounter with the mysterious girl that is Grace Ashford.
