"I'm a victim of society!"
"I guess you're just a social casualty then, huh?"
"I guess you're right."
"You say that like it's a bad thing."
In which a boy thinks the world and everyone in it are against him until a certain girl can change his mind.
It was 2:00 on a Saturday, and as usual I was on my way to my favorite coffee shop to try and warm up a little. Right as I opened the glass door, the same little bell at the top of the door frame dinged. Music to my ears. I was approaching the counter to place my order, but stopped as soon as I heard muffled shouting coming from behind the counter.
"Calum, this is the fourth time that you've messed up someones order today, and not to mention the fact that you have been late to work for the past week! What is going on with you!" A man, who I'm guessing owned the little store, yelled.
"I don't know what's wrong with me, all I've been doing lately is messing things up! Just let me try again, I'll clean the counters, I can try to-" Calum was cut off by the man.
"Listen Calum, maybe you should just take a break from work for awhile. Take some time to figure things out, okay?" The man said with an apologetic look on his face, though I could tell the it was fake, and I'm pretty sure Calum could tell as well.
"Fuck this, I'm leaving. Don't expect me to come back. I can get a job anywhere I want!" Calum screamed towards the unknown man and started to make his way out of the shop. He walked past me making brief eye contact, he stopped for a second like he recognized me but kept walking.
I decided to go after him.
I ran to try and catch up to him, because he has these fucking long ass legs. Once I was by his side, I didn't really know what to say.
"Hi." Was all I could manage. He looked at me.
"Hey." And continued walking, at a faster pace than me.
"I saw what happened back there, are you okay?" I asked, hoping that I would get more than a single word response.
"Yeah, I guess."
"Three is good enough." I said to myself.
"Huh?" He asked, confused as to what I was getting at.
"Never mind, so are you really gonna find another job or were you just bluffing?" I asked, genuinely curious.
"Why are you talking to me? What did I do to deserve your attention, you are really annoying did you know that? Just leave me alone please." Calum said quite sarcastically.
"What the fuck crawled up your ass? I was just trying to be friendly." I chuckled.
"Why would you want to be friendly to me, I was an asshole to you in the eighth grade." He stated, hoping that that would get me to leave.
"I believe in fresh starts, let's just put the past behind us and move on."
"Yes, I will now move on from this conversation." And with that Calum started speed walking down the road.
It feels like I am always the one left in this situation, being alone.
Once I was home, I sprinted through the kitchen. I have been avoiding someone lately and I have no regrets for doing it. She was never really there for me when I needed her and was constantly working. Saturday's were usually her days off from work, so if she is home I'm going to sneak up to my room. I glanced around in the silent room, thinking that I was alone and that she was with her work buddies or whatever they were. I walked through the dark living room when all the sudden the lights flashed on.
"Hello Grace darling." That voice, that monotonous voice that I hear constantly. I turned on my heel with a fake smile.
"Hello mother, how are you today."

"Oh Grace, I know you couldn't possibly care less about how I'm feeling to day, so I'm gonna cut to the chase. I'm going on a business trip for about 3 and a half weeks and a nice man from my work facility offered for his son to stay with you while I'm gone. He will be temporarily moving in until I return, and no, you do not have a say in this so do not bother arguing with me. When you get angry, you get wrinkles."
"But mother-."
"Sweetheart are you angry." She asked me with raised eyebrows.
"Well yeah I am-." I was cut off once again.
"Ah ah ah, you will get wrinkles on that pretty little face of yours." She said with a devilish smile on her face. "Now I must be on my way to catch my flight, the young man will be here tomorrow morning with all of his things necessary for living here. I will see you in 3 and a half weeks. Goodbye dear." And with that she grabbed her suitcase and walked out the front door.
I can't believe her. Though I'm not surprised that she is leaving on such short notice, this is typical for my mother. When I was 13 she had one of these "very important business trips" to go on, and she just left me with my neighbor for a week. Without any warning or explanation, she just left. I've gotten used to it over the years and she has always left me with someone who I am comfortable with. But this is a new level of shallow, leaving me with a mysterious guy. I bet she doesn't even know his name. To say the least I am not happy about this and I will not hesitate to kick this guy's ass. So bring it on.
