What Grey Eyes You Have

I must have fallen asleep on the way home. I was vaguely aware of Vince carrying me towards my front door. He knocked and the door opened wildly.

“Anabella!” I heard Em and Clar shout out in unison.

I jumped startled at their loud obnoxious voices, boy was I so glad to hear them again. I rubbed my eyes open and smiled at them.

“Guys!” I shouted excitedly.

“Oh my gawsh An you look like shit!” Em said in a distressed tone.

“I can say the same about you.” I said solemnly. They both looked like crap. Their faces were stained with runny mascara and their eyes were swollen from crying. Vince put me down carefully; I gave him a grateful smile.

“Well, I think you ladies look quite lovely.” Vince said trying to lighten the mood.

We all raised an eyebrow at him. He coughed clearing his throat and put his hand behind his head.

“Well, uh, I’ll let you ladies catch up.” He said a little awkwardly. “Please do not hesitate to call me if you need anything.” This he said more seriously. He gave me a tight hug then cupped my face, his eyes were full of unease, but he didn’t say anthing. He surprised me by kissing my forehead gently. He started to walk towards the door when Clar spoke up.

“Thank you, for bringing her home. I don’t know what we would have done if something…if she…” She let the sentence fall, but he understood what she meant.

“You don’t have to thank me ladies, I would have done it regardless. I would do anything for her.” He looked at me again, grey eyes, full of unease. I smiled at him, trying to communicate with my eyes that I was fine, that there was nothing to worry about. He lips twitched at a corner, he wasn’t convinced. He turned towards Em and Clar and gave them a nod and walked out the door.

As soon as he was gone I grabbed Em and Clar and squeezed them tight, tears started spilling down my face. There were several moments tonight that I thought I would never see them again. I was beyond thankful to still be here with them. We didn’t speak; we just stood there holding each other, crying, like that dreadful prom night. I never thought we would be put in a situation like that again, losing someone we loved, and they almost lost me tonight. Emma spoke up this time.

“An, you’re in desperate need of a shower.” She said weakly.

I let out a laugh, “I know.”

I let go of them and we started wiping our tears away. I smiled at them weakly and headed straight for the bathroom. Once I was behind closed doors, I tore my filthy clothes off anxious to get into the shower.

I stood there, letting the hot water hit me. My muscles started to relax; I hadn’t realized how tense I was. I started shampooing my hair. The floral scent reminded me of sun filled days and fields of wild flowers. I was going to my happy place, somewhere my mother use to take me when I was younger. It’s a secret spot that only her, my dad and I know about. There’s a place in the forest where the trees create an impossible heart shaped clearing. During the spring, a variety of wild flowers bloom within the heart. That’s the place where my parents met. My mother was out on a hike one spring day when she twisted her ankle. Somehow my father stumbled upon her. As my Momma Carla would say, my mother melted like butter on pancakes when she first looked into my father eyes. I smiled as I tried to visualize the scene. You’re face is like a book Beautiful. I opened my eyes quickly looking around frantically, but I was alone. I took deep breaths to try and relax my heart rate. It’s all in your head An, you had a traumatic night. My patience has run short Beautiful. Stay still. I almost yelled this time, but there was no one, I was alone. The memory came flooding back, his disgusting lips and cold hands on me. I scrubbed my body mercilessly, trying to erase him, but I still felt him on me. I started crying again and curled into my little ball, rocking myself back and forth. He’s gone. Dante’s voice broke through my turmoil. Then there was soft knocking at the door.
