I felt so nervous to approach them the next day at college, but I needed to know where my lunchbox was. It wasn't an expensive item or anything, but it had a lot of emotional value to me. I shoved my fears to the back of my mind and headed to the jam room where the Fab 5 usually hung out.
"Where the hell are they?" I asked myself, glancing at the empty room.
I decided to walk out when I heard the door open behind me. I turned around in surprise.
"Nandini," Dhruv smiled.
"Hi," I said a little embarrassed.
"What are you doing in the jam room? I didn't know you were into music," he said cheerfully.
"I came to look for something. I'm not very musical," I mumbled.
"Oh, what are you looking for? Maybe I can help you?"
I wasn't sure if I should tell him what I was looking for, but he seemed genuinely interested and kind so I went ahead. "My lunchbox. My cousin said that Cabir has it."
Dhruv raised an eyebrow and asked, "Your lunchbox? Why would Cabir have it?"
"It's a long story," I sighed and slumped my shoulders.
"How long have you been studying here? I don't think I have seen you around our college before," Dhruv suddenly asked, changing the subject.
"A couple of months," I replied.
"Really?" he asked surprised.
I nodded and fumbled with the straps of my handbag. I didn't know why I was feeling so nervous, but maybe it had to do with the fact that he was a member of Fab 5, the cruel college gang. Though Dhruv didn't seem like the rest of them.
"I have to go now. I will see you around?" Dhruv smiled.
"Yeah," I said and returned the smile.
"And I will try to find your lunchbox," he said before walking out of the room.
I was thinking about Dhruv when I opened the door to exit the jam room.
"Look who we have here!"
I looked up instantly and saw Cabir smirking at me and next to him was Mukti. She frowned and gave Cabir a questioning look.
"Her name is country brute and she wants my dïck," he snickered.
Mukti looked me up and down with a disgusted look on her face.
"Stop it!" I growled at Cabir.
"Who the fück are you to tell us anything?" Mukti scoffed.
I looked down and held onto my handbag tighter. I didn't want to argue with them, I just wanted to be left in peace and I wanted my lunchbox back.
"I want my lunchbox back," I said quietly.
"Lunchbox? Do I look like your mother?" he asked in a condescending tone.
"Rishabh told me that you have it..."
"Who the hell is Rishabh? Are you high or something?"
"He is my cousin and it's a green lunchbox. If you have it, please return it to me. It means a lot to me," I explained with pleading eyes.
Mukti rolled her eyes in annoyance and said, "Cabir, get rid of her. She is pissing me off."
"Get lost country brute," Cabir said with a bored look.
"Please, I want it back..."
"Are you deaf or something? I said GET LOST!" Cabir shouted loudly, making some students in the corridor look our way.
Before I had the chance to leave, I was pushed harshly and ended up on the floor. I groaned out loud in pain when my previously bruised shoulder hit the floor tiles. Cabir and Mukti were laughing at me whilst I tried to get up in shame. I gathered the things that had fallen out of my handbag and walked off quickly with tears in my eyes.
I couldn't concentrate during the next lesson because my mind kept replaying that incident from earlier. I rubbed my bruised shoulder and looked out of the classroom window. I couldn't wait to get home and have a hot bath.
"Miss Nandini!" Mrs. Kapur shouted.
"Yes, Mrs. Kapur?" I asked startled.
"If you want to daydream, you can do that outside my class!" she growled.
"I wasn't daydreaming," I mumbled.
"And now you are talking back to me? OUT!" she yelled and pointed to the door.
I grabbed my things and headed out of the classroom door with my head bent down. I decided to go to the library and do some reading for my literature assignment, which was due next week.
When I entered the library, I heard weird noises I could not place. I furrowed my eyebrows and followed the noises to the back of the library.
"Oh yeah, right there baby..."
I held my hand in front of my mouth and stared at the couple who were busy making out against one of the bookshelves. It was that jerk Manik and his girlfriend Alya. His hands were squeezing her ass as his mouth was sucking on her neck. She was moaning softly and running her fingers through his hair. The loud sound of my ringtone, made them let go of each other in shock. I felt like a deer caught in the headlights as their angry gazes were fixed upon me.
