I ran to the girl's bathroom as some of the students stared after me. I locked myself inside one of the toilet stalls and remained there until I calmed down. I tried to find my handkerchief inside my handbag. I gave up my search and used toilet paper to wipe my runny nose. I let out a deep sigh and unlocked the door. There was no one there so I took my time washing my face with cold water.

I felt a lot better when I was on my way to my next class, but the events from earlier haunted my mind. I could not believe that they had humiliated me like this. At the end of math class, I decided to forget about it, because it was not worth it to start a fight with those snobs.

My stomach growled during lunchbreak and I cursed my damned cousin for stealing my lunch. I would have taken money with me had I known that this would happen. I grabbed my water bottle out of my bag with a sigh and took a seat at an empty table.

"Hi."

I glanced at the person who had spoken to me. My jaw nearly dropped when I realized who it was.

"You...dropped this," he said and handed me something.

"What?" I asked in a state of shock.

"Your handkerchief."

It was the handkerchief I had been searching for earlier inside my handbag.

"Thank you," I said pleasantly surprised, and took it.

"You are welcome," he smiled and though I wanted to smile back, I didn't.

"I'm Dhruv."

I frowned because I did not understand why he was introducing himself to me.

Was this some kind of prank?

I gathered my things and got up from the table. Dhruv looked somewhat confused, but he did not stop me. I looked back to check if he was still standing there and saw him looking back at me. I turned my head around fast and left the canteen.

"Fücking watch it!"

My pupils dilated when I saw who I had run into. "Oh god," I mumbled under my breath.

"YOU?" Manik growled.

"I-I didn't watch where I was going..."

"Obviously!" he scoffed bitterly.

"I...eh...will go," I said and passed him.

He pulled me back, however, making me lose my balance. In a desperate attempt to not fall on my face, I grabbed his arm.

"What the hell?" he yelled as we landed on the floor together.

I groaned when my bruised shoulder from earlier hit the hard floor. Tears sprang into my eyes due to the pain and I bit back a sob.

"Get off of me!" Manik spat in anger.

My body was partly on his, but I wasn't able to get up or move to the side.

"Are you deaf?!" he growled.

"I...can't," I whimpered in pain.

"You can't?" he asked, his eyes flaming with rage.

"M-my shoulder is bruised..."

He rolled his eyes and pushed me aside with force. I groaned in pain whilst he got up and brushed his clothes. He shot me a disgusted look. I blinked to keep the tears away and held my bruised shoulder.

"Take my hand," Dhruv suddenly said, appearing out of nowhere.

He reached his hand out to me with a friendly smile.

"Dhruv, what are you doing?" Manik asked irritated with furrowed eyebrows.

"Helping her up. She is in pain," he said softly. "Take my hand."

I saw no other option than to accept his help. He handed me my handbag when I was up on my feet.

"Thank you," I whispered and I kept my gaze down.

"Are you hurt?" he asked.

"I'm okay," I lied.

"Who cares if she is hurt, let's go, Dhruv. We are wasting our time," Manik said with a bored look.

Dhruv gave me a small smile and walked off with Manik.

My shoulder was really aching when I reached home that evening. I examined it in the bathroom mirror. The bruised place was red and swollen. I sighed and applied a balm to help it heal.

When I joined my uncle and aunty for dinner that night, my cousin Rishabh acted like an angel. I shot him daggers across the table, but he ignored it.

"It's your guys' turn to do the dishes," my aunty reminded us.

"So where is my lunchbox?" I glared whilst Rishabh and I were doing the dishes.

"Cabir has it."

"What?! Rishabh! My grandma got me that lunchbox!" I yelled.

My stupid cousin shrugged and said, "Not my problem."

"It was you who stole it in the first place so it is your problem! Get me my lunchbox back," I hissed through gritted teeth.

"Nandini, you will never see that lunchbox again," he smirked evilly and walked away with his head held high.
