Florence Marie Jensen is deaf. Simple as that. She has been since she was twelve years old. She just woke up one day and she couldn't hear. She couldn't hear her parents say I love you anymore. She couldn't listen to music anymore. She couldn't do anything about it either. When the kids at school found out she went deaf, they laughed at her. They called her names, knowing she couldn't hear them.
Four months after she found out, her father was offered a job in London. He, of course, took it. Not only for the money, but also for Florence. She needed to get away from everything. So they moved to London, bought a small home, and settled there. Her mother homeschooled her and she learned to read people's lips.
Now Florence is eighteen. She almost never goes outside, afraid of people laughing at her. When she does go outside, she stays hidden behind her mother. As if her mother could do anything, anyway. While out by herself, she meets a boy. She tries not to associate with him, but he won't give up. She knows he's something special, but she doesn't want to admit it to him or anybody else.
What she doesn't know is that her mother is trying to find her a doctor that can help Florence get better. And she'd like to keep it that way.
