______'s alarm clock blared through the quiet room. She had already been awake for a couple of hours before it went off. Every night was accompanied by the same nightmares, and she was more than sick of it. She slammed her hand down on the snooze button, grumbling while rolling onto her back. She laid there for a few more moments before dragging herself out of bed.
She stood up, swaying a little as she walked to her balcony for a cigarette. She stretched and rubbed her shoulder, a little sore from the night before, then lit a cigarette while leaning over the railing. Smiling, _______ stared down to the street through tired eyes, people watching was one of her favorite things to do. While ______ stood and observed the people under her, her mind started to wander. She was pissed at herself for what she had done last night. All that hard work to find a new home, and how well she was going about laying low. Only to be ruined by some assholes trying to mess with her. Not to mention, Shizuo clearly almost saw that it was her. The last thing she needed was a nosey co-worker ready to give her up. She quietly cursed herself and her temper while flicking her cigarette, watching it slowly fall to the ground.
"Stupid punks." she grunted, turning to head inside and get ready for another day.
Once outside, ______ figured she should check her mail before beginning her adventure around the city. Only, it was rather hard to do, given that the mailbox was now gone. "What the hell...?" She stared at the spot on the ground where the mailbox once stood. It looked as if it were torn from the concrete spot it was bolted into. She shrugged and started heading down the road to find some place to eat. About a mile up the road, she started seeing papers, envelopes, magazines, and other things lying around the place. Her eyes followed the trail of paper and stopped when her gaze fell onto her buildings mailbox, on it's side! She shook her head and kept walking, assuming some moron hit it with their car during the night.
Once in the main square of the city she stopped and looked around, hoping to find a good place to grab a bite. She moved to walk a little further in and jumped.
"Come! You try Russia Sushi!" a loud voice boomed next to her. Whipping her head around, she was met with a flyer being shoved in her face. Her eyes slowly moved upwards and saw a tall black man dressed like a sushi chef. "New crab sushi is good!" he smiled down to her, continuing in his Russian accent, "It make you happy!" she took the flyer, raising an eyebrow at the man. His accent and outfit had to be some kind of joke, right?
"Yeah, yeah... I'll try your damn sushi." ______ folded the flyer and tucked it into her back pocket as the man beamed at her. She sighed while he steered her into the restaurant.
The place looked like any other sushi joint. Nothing special, and ______ wasn't one to say no to cheap food. She picked a seat near the back of the restaurant and buried her face in a menu, trying to decide what to try.
"Simon must've dragged you in here." she heard a familiar voice say in front of her. She slowly peeked over her menu and saw Shizuo standing there next to another man in a suit with dreads. She watched as he pushed his sunglasses up, smirking. ______'s eyes moved back to the menu.
"Following me again, Shizuo?" she was a little annoyed, but also a little relieved someone she knew was there. She shot a glance back to him just in time to see his smirk fade.
"Small town." he said rather gruff, looking away while the man next to him chuckled lightly. She folded her menu and sat back to look at the two.
"Well, don't be weirdos, have a seat already." ______ said while motioning to the empty seats at her table. "I have no idea what's good here... Maybe you two can help me decide on what to order." she was a little surprised with herself. Usually she ran from the thought of someone she barely knew joining her for lunch, but being alone all the time was... Well, damn lonely. Shizuo was clearly surprised too, because he looked as if he was caught off guard by her offer. She watched as he glanced at his friend, who shrugged and pulled out a seat.
The three of them sat together talking for a while, losing track of time. ______ found out that the man with Shizuo was named Tom, and that Shizuo worked for him part time.
"I have a pretty hard time keeping a job, so this guy lets me work for him." Shizuo said while popping a piece of sushi into his mouth.
"I know how that is..." ______ sighed, propping her chin on one of her hands while turning to Tom. "That's pretty generous of you, keeping a creeper like this guy around." she jutted a thumb in Shizuo's direction. She wanted to ask what they did for work, but decided against it, not wanting to be rude. Their company was a breath of fresh air for ______. She even cracked a smile a few times while they conversed over different plates of sushi. It was a strange feeling for her since she was so used to being alone, but she liked it.
Tom's response was cut off when his phone rang. "Excuse me for a minute, I have to take this." he sighed while standing up. "Yeah?" was all ______ heard while she watched him walk outside the restaurant. When she turned around to grab her bill and pay, she saw her ticket was in Shizuo's hand.
"Hey! Give me that!" she reached for the paper, only for Shizuo to swiftly move it away from her hand, standing.
"Nah, it's on me." he waved the ticket at her before turning to pay the bill. ______ tossed a tip onto the table then headed outside next to Tom, who was finishing up on the phone. She lit a cigarette while keeping her distance from him, not wanting him to think she was eavesdropping.
"Hey Shizuo, I gotta head back to the office. I'll see you later?" he shoved his phone into his pocket while ______ turned her head to see Shizuo nod at him, sparking a cigarette of his own while joining them outside. "It was nice to meet you ______! Hope to see you around again!" Tom smiled before waving, leaving the two of them alone in front of Russia Sushi.
"Well, he seems like a nice guy." ______ said, rather awkwardly. She never was good at starting conversations. She flicked the ash from the end of her cigarette, mentally damning her social anxiety. She kept looking towards the street, not seeing Shizuo smile softly while he smoked next to her.
The thought struck her suddenly. She didn't know the city very well and she had hours before the night shift at the bar. Plus, something about Shizuo's company was almost calming to her....
"Hey. You busy right now?" she asked, still looking away from him.
"No. Why?" Shizuo flicked his cigarette out then put his hand in his pocket.
"How about a tour of the city? She turned to him and tilted her head slightly. She fought back a grin when he shrugged his shoulders and started walking down the street. He turned to call over his shoulder.
"Come on kid, let's go." he motioned for her to follow before turning to face ahead of him again. ______ felt something funny in her stomach as she walked off after him, smiling. Maybe it was just the sushi.
