Prologue: An Unexpected Offer - Percy's POV

Trudging dejectedly back to Posiedon's cabin, I thought back over what I'd just seen. That was it; the final straw. I couldn't take it anymore. I stormed straight in and grabbed my backpack, stuffing it with some spare clothes, some mortal money and drachmas, and a toothbrush. Then I left my fathers cabin and just kept walking.

I couldn't believe it. I even had the feeling that Annabeth knew I was watching, but she did it anyway ...

*FLASHBACK - 15 minutes ago*

Percy was strolling leisurely through the woods, looking for a monster to fight, when he saw two figures in the clearing ahead. Creeping silently up to behind a tree, he saw Annabeth and Xavier-a son of Ares-outlined in moonlight. Just for a second, a twig snapped beneath his feet and Annabeth's head whipped around. But she soon dismissed it as an animal.

Peaking out from behind the tree, he watched in despair as Xavier ran his hands through Annabeth's hair. Percy turned away as their lips met. He ran. He didn't even care if they spotted him.

Some girlfriend. Cheating on him with the son of the war God who tried to crush him at every opportunity. The wind ripped at his clothes as he ran away from the girl he thought he'd loved.

*END FLASHBACK*

I snuck to the top of Half-Blood hill, gazing longingly at the cluster of cabins below. Just as I was musing over what I was going to do, a man appeared next to me. I mean he literally appeared next to me; one moment there was nothing, the next he was there.

I couldn't tell much about him as he was hidden under a large, midnight black cloak with an elongated hood covering his face and cloaking him in darkness.

'Hello Perseus Jackson,' his voice sounded smooth, but ancient, like he hadn't used it in a long, long time.

I bowed. I didn't know if he was a god or whatever, but I'd learnt to be careful with the immortal types, they tended to get offended easily and that's when things started to explode. And this guy was obviously an immortal.

'Hello,' I paused. 'May I ask who you are?'

'Who I am,' the man repeated, 'I am Lord Chaos, the creator of the everything and, if you will accept my offer, your new leader.'

I hesitated, immediately wary, 'leader?'

'I know your plans, Percy,' Chaos seemed sympathetic, 'you wouldn't survive long without your camp. I have a better idea; you can come with me to my realm and be the commander of my armies. I need new warriors. I have followed your progress, Percy, and I believe that there is no one better to be my general. You will have your pick of warriors. I have cashed in a very ancient debt with Hades and he had agreed for me to withdraw any souls I should want. Anyone who you think would be good for your army shall be brought forth. You only have to come with me.'

I stood frozen in shock for a millennium, or so it felt. The creator of the universe wanted me to be the commander of his forces? I could bring back any soul I wanted to be in my own army?

I cast a glance at the valley behind me. Chaos seemed to understand my indecision, 'This won't be the last time you see your camp, Percy. Think about what you would have if you stayed here.'

So I did and it was true; I didn't have anything. My mom and step-dad hadn't contacted me in ages, Annabeth was cheating on me, my father and I had an argument and departed with angry words.

I looked at my new Lord and nodded, 'You've got yourself a new commander.'

'Excellent.'

He flicked down his hood and I saw his face for the first time. His skin was the colour of oak and his deep, chocolate brown eyes were filled with every emotion you could imagine; anger, happiness, sadness, joy, fear, exultation. He smiled at me and I felt a warmth spread throughout my body, relaxing me instantly.

'Come, commander,' he opened a door of pure darkness, 'come to my planet.'

I looked at Camp-Half Blood for the final time. Everything I had once loved was down there; but no more.

This is the end, I thought. Then I turned and followed Chaos through the portal.
