Chapter 13: More Problems - Frank's POV

The next time they came, it wasn't just for Epsilon.

He was much better the next day. Epsilon was already up when the rest of us woke. He shook Piper and me awake, then crawled over to wake Annabeth.

While Epsilon was handing out the food the shadows brought, I pulled her aside.

'I thought you said you were going to take watch,' I said, 'Why was it Epsilon who woke us? It shouldn't have been him after whatever happened yesterday.'

'It wasn't my fault,' she insisted, 'He woke up and we talked. Then he put his hand on my forehead and put me to sleep. Looks like Destruction couldn't take all his powers.'

I felt hope flare within me. If we could use that one power to our advantage ...

'Hey guys,' Piper called, 'you're missing out on breakfast.'

We laughed at the joke. This was not breakfast; it was breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I took my small share of bread and wolfed it down hungrily.

All through the day, Epsilon seemed determined to show everyone that he was stable and completely capable of doing things, despite our efforts to get him to sit down and rest.

He pulled himself together enough to tell us what happened when the shadows took him yesterday. When he was done, everyone was looking at him in horror. Even Annabeth who'd heard it before.

'Oh my gods,' Angel stuttered after a long silence.

Epsilon just nodded.

'Why didn't you tell us?' Flames said, 'We could've helped.'

'No,' Epsilon stood, leaving us on the floor, 'I didn't want to tell you because I don't want Destruction using it against you all. You can't let him know you know.'

'Why not?' Angel demanded sternly, 'We want to help, Epsilon. We don't care.'

'You should care!' Epsilon grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her, 'Thats the point. I don't want you to care. I don't want any of you getting hurt because of me. I wanted to die, Angel. That's how bad the pain was. It made me feel like I just wanted to end it all.'

Piper and Annabeth jumped up and pulled him away from Angel who was shaking. Epsilon leaned against a wall and slid to the ground, crying.

'I don't want any of you to die because of me,' he whispered.

Annabeth knelt next to him and put her hand on his shoulder. They seemed to be a lot closer since last night; Epsilon would no longer tense when she was around and she was a lot calmer around him.

'We're not going to die,' she said softly, 'We have to have faith in ourselves and each other. Otherwise, this war will be lost before its even begun. Faith is so important and if we don't have it, all is already gone. If we don't have faith, what are we fighting for?'
