Chapter 13 ~ Liam

When I woke up, I had to remind myself that I wasn’t alone in this apartment. Just down the hallway was Parker, and I knew she was awake by the noise that was happening in the kitchen. It smelled like she was making breakfast, and I smiled. That was nice—and so unlike her.

“Something’s bothering you, Parker. What is it? Are you okay?” A Bradford accent said. I raised an eyebrow. Zayn was here? I got up and pulled on a t-shirt before walking out, and I could faintly hear the two talking, although it wasn’t clear what it was about. “…And you get used to him eventually.” Zayn said.

"Get used to whom eventually?” I asked when I rounded the corner. Zayn and Parker both looked at me, seeming surprised that I was standing there.

“You,” Zayn said, and I raised my eyebrow again, but let it go and went to the kitchen, prepared to make breakfast.

Just then, Parker snatched the eggs out of my hand. “I got it, don’t worry,” she said, walking over to the stove.

I blinked. Was she doing something for me? I thought that she was rude and didn’t do anything for anyone else. “No, Parker. You don’t have to do that.” I said.

“Yes, I do.” She shot back, standing her ground.

I smirked. “I think I can make my own breakfast.”

“How do you take your eggs?” She asked, completely brushing aside my comment.

“Over easy.” I sighed, giving up. She won this time. She didn’t even turn around, but in a few minutes she set the plate in front of me. Who knew Parker Harrison could cook? I smiled and pulled out the chair for her. My face fell when she scoffed and left the room to sit with Zayn.

Why did she do that? She made it clear that she wasn’t all smiles and manners, so it didn’t make sense why she was being nice. She said she didn’t like owing people anything, but it wasn’t like I saved her from a serial killer. I gave her a place to stay, that’s it. Nonetheless, I was happy she wasn’t ignoring me. After I was done eating, I washed the dishes and put them away, then sat down next to Parker on the couch.

“Thank you.” I said.

“I had to.” She said plainly, not even looking at me.

I was confused. “You did?”

“Yeah, Liam I did. Because for some reason you’re being nice to me and I have no idea why. You’re letting me stay here, and I have no other way to repay you, and I don’t like owing people anything. I can’t give you anything back because I have nothing.” She looked at me now, frowning and studying my face.

What was she talking about? She didn’t have to repay me! It wasn’t a big deal. And why wouldn’t I be nice to her? Yeah, she wasn’t the nicest person out there at times, but she wasn’t a terrible person—I knew she wasn’t. “You don’t have to owe me anything. Just accept it and leave it. It’s okay.” I tried to tell her, but she wasn’t having it.

“No it’s not.” And then she grabbed her bag and stormed down the hallway to the bathroom.

“What have you gotten yourself into?” Zayn asked as soon as we heard the door close.

I put my face in my hands. “I have no idea.” I mumbled. “I don’t understand her! I just wanted to help and she thinks that she has to do everything for me.”

“She’s weird mate. But pretty fit, if that counts for anything.” He grinned. I gave him a death glare and his smile evaporated. “Do the other lads know?”
