I hadn't seen Evie since the first day on the Night's Jewel. I'd seen Henry and Archer every day, along with a groggy and short tempered Moleck, who quickly went to bed.
I also saw Rook frequently, running around the deck and doing any job that an elderly assassin was heading towards. He shouted at her every time he noticed what she was doing and she would laugh and move to the next task. After twenty minutes of doing this, the elderly assassin looked around before glaring at Rook. "Now I don't have anything to do! Any ideas Rookie?"
Rook leaned against the center mast and smirked at him. "You could do something that wouldn't put you at risk of getting injured."
The assassin glared some more. "Such as?"
Rook laughed and walked over to him, clapping him on the back. "That's for you to find out, Cooper."
He grumbled and headed toward where Archer stood at the wheel. Rook smiled after him and shook her head.
"Who was that?" I asked, climbing half way up the net and looking down at her.
Rook looked up. "That was Cooper. He's the oldest member of Archer's crew. He doesn't like to take it easy and absolutely hates it when I'm around. He's really nice to everyone else though." Rook climbed up the mast until she was at my level and sat down. "Can I quiz you now? You seem to always ask me questions but I never get to ask you any."
I suddenly became very suspicious. "I suppose," I frowned at her. "No personal ones though."
Rook laughed. "Of course not!" That made me even more suspicious. "How old are you?"
I sighed. "I thought these weren't personal."
"It isn't!" Rook objected laughing. "I'm seventeen, I don't know better." She shot me her smirk again. "Just answer the question Jacob Frye."
I sighed. "Twenty." I was surprised when she said she was seventeen. I thought she was only fifteen.
"Is your sister annoying?"
"Honestly Rook! I shouldn't have said yes to you quizzing me."
Rook started to climb up higher. "You didn't say yes," she said pausing and looking down at me. "You said 'I suppose' and I took that as a yes."
"You little-" I stopped, not knowing what to say next. Rook laughed and bounded away, once again disappearing from sight before I could chase her down. I sighed and climbed down to the deck.
Once again I didn't have anything to do. I sat down next to a barrel and leaned against the railing. There were clouds in the sky, dark gray and ominous. Almost guaranteeing that it was going to rain soon. I heard a nearby pair of the crew talking about the dark sky. I curiously tilted my head and listened.
"-nice," one of them said. "Rain is a sure sign that we're almost there. Happens every time without fail."
"Nice? You think needing to be on the deck while it's raining is nice?!" the second one said. "I hate the rain, and I hate working while I'm wet."
"You'll just have to get used to it then. We keep moving, rain or no rain, doesn't matter. As long as we keep the ship moving and reach our destination on time!"
"So yer sayin' that I just need to suck it up and deal with it?!"
I winced as the simple conversation turned into a shouting match. Both crew members were yelling at the top of their lungs. None of the others noticed, but Archer glanced at the two in annoyance.
Just as I was about to make them stop there was a thump and I leaned forward to see around the barrel. Rook stood between two very surprised crew members. She scowled fiercely at both of them. "You two had better shut up and do your jobs!"
"But what if it rains?" the second one asked quietly.
Rook turned her steely glare on him with undivided attention. "What have you got against rain?"
The man didn't meet her eyes. "I don't like working when I'm wet."
It was really hard not to laugh at the sight of the two burly crew members cowering in front of a very angry girl, who was shorter than them by about four inches. Even if that girl was an assassin with a glare that froze even the bravest soul.
"If you don't like working while your wet then you aren't meant to be a sailor," Rook stepped back, looking from one man to the other. "Have I made myself clear?"
"Yes, Quartermaster," the two mumbled, looking down.
"Good." Rook stomped off, swords glinting and clicking together behind her.
Quartermaster huh? And here I thought I was starting to get her figured out.

Hey everyone! Hope you all enjoyed this chapter. I promise this is the last chapter where they are at sea the whole time... for a while anyway.
A note on Rook: I've said that she is me as an assassin, HOWEVER, I did not mention that she is also four years older than I am. The reason is that I REALLY DON'T WANT TO WRITE A FOURTEEN YEAR OLD ASSASSIN... and I don't know why...
No questions at the moment, but feel free to ask. For the characters or for me.
May the wind blow strong in your sails!
