Henry and Archer were deep in conversation, Rook was sitting in the rigging, Evie, Arno, and Moleck were probably sleeping, and I was wandering aimlessly with nothing to do.
Suddenly, Archer stopped talking, Evie, Arno, and Moleck came onto the deck, and Rook leaned back to look at something and almost fell out of the rigging. Rook grabbed a rope and swung down to the deck.
I jogged over to her. "Why is everyone suddenly coming?"
Rook jumped slightly, a sure sign she was tense. "We have a ship on our tail. The HMS Blue Jay it's the one with the blue sails." She rolled her eyes. "English people always think of the worst names. No offense."
"I'd be worried if I took offense. You're from England too." I craned my neck and saw the blue sailed ship Rook had mentioned.
"A fair point. But I like America better. I have more friends there." She smiled at me and bounded up the stairs to where Archer, Henry, Evie, Moleck, and Arno had gathered. I followed her, curious of what we were going to do.
"I have a solution!" Rook shouted, jumping onto the railing.
Everyone stopped talking to look at her.
"Do we want to know what your solution is Blackbird?" Archer asked.
Rook's hood was pushed down by a gust of wind. She shot Archer an annoyed look. "Of course you want to know. Why wouldn't you?"
Archer smiled. "Because I think I already know what it is."
Rook huffed and pulled her hood up. "We turn around and take the ship."
"Why am I not surprised?" Archer said with a laugh.
"Because nothing surprises you," Rook said.
"That's not true," Arno said, grinning at Archer. "He was surprised the day we helped the Revolutionaries."
"Hmph," Archer spun the wheel.
"What are you doing?" Evie asked.
"Unless you have a better idea than Rook, we attack."
Evie shook her head and Archer nodded. "Ready starboard cannons!"
"We've only got one crate captain!" one of the crew shouted.
"Ready the cannons anyway!" Rook shouted. "I'll take care of the rest!"
The crew started to load the cannons on the right hand side of the ship. I watched as they ran around.
"Cannons ready!"
Archer steered us far to the left of the HMS Blue Jay. "FIRE!"
The cannons fired at the same time in a series of explosions. The cannonballs crashed into the side of the other ship. Splinters flew in all directions and the enemy crew started yelling and scrambling around.
"Clear shot there sir!" the man at the swivel said. "Shall I fire?"
"Yes you shall," Rook said, letting Archer concentrate on steering.
I watched Archer spin the wheel so we were pointed right at the HMS Blue Jay. I noticed he was as tense as Rook was.
Rook leaped off of the railing. "ENEMY FIRE! BRACE!"
Not knowing what else to do, I grabbed the railing and held on tight. There was the explosions of cannons from the other ship. A moment after, right as I was about to let go, The Night's Jewel came to an abrupt stop with a loud crack. I lost my grip on the railing and fell down the stairs, crashing full force into some barrels.
I winced and sat up. The HMS Blue Jay was starting to sink beneath the waves. I rubbed the back of my head, wishing I'd held on just a little tighter.
"You alright down there Jacob?" Archer called.
I looked up and saw him resting his arms on the wheel. He looked relieved. "I'm fine," I said. "Just a little bruised."
"Well," Arno said. "I'm going to bed now."
Arno, Evie, and Moleck all started for below decks. Henry and Archer resumed talking as if nothing had happened.
I stood up and climbed the mast I had almost crashed into. I sat in the crows nest. The view was amazing right now, but I knew that in about an hour there would be nothing but ocean in all directions.
Rook appeared over the edge and pulled herself up. "Greetings."
"Hello to you too," I said, still looking at the islands as we sailed by.
Rook started digging in her belt for something. "I know I put that pouch on this morning," she muttered, opening one of the many pockets I didn't know she had. She finally found what she was looking for and pulled it out. It was a small anchor pendent. "This is for you."
I took it. "Thanks?"
Rook smiled. "It's the mark of the Inner Brotherhood. Archer, Arno, and Henry all worked at me to give you one, that you deserved it. I gave in this morning. You'll be able to communicate with any of the assassins in the Inner Brotherhood as long as you have met them before."
I stared at the anchor. I was part of the Inner Brotherhood and I had no idea what to do.
