"Hello!" I singsong as I walk into the front door of my house. My lovely home of seventeen years.
"Hey Delilah! How was your first full day?" My dad greets, wrapping me in a warm hug.
"Good, just like yesterday was." I respond with a smile.
"That's great. Sorry I wasn't home yesterday. Super busy. School supplies shopping and such. How are you liking your new school?" My dad shuffles awkwardly. Sometimes he can be so weird, I just forget about what he is for his occupation, even though it's not really bad at all. He helps souls, as I like to describe it.
"I actually really like it there. I've already made two friends!" I inform him excitedly. Then I remember. Lucas. Date. Tonight. Can't tell dad. Can't even hint to dad. (Mental pout) "In fact," I add, "I'm going to go hang out with Kathy later!"
"Is that so?" He asks, crossing his arms in an attempt to be intimidating. He almost pulls it off, until his smile twitches at the corner of his mouth. After that, his pale face just looks silly, and the same black hair as mine messed up on top of his head makes him look like any normal, caring guy.
I just laugh at him, reach up, and mess up his hair some more. He sighs and lets his arms fall back down.
"Anyways, who is this second friend?"
"Lucy." I say without any mental debate. There is no way I'm telling him Lucas' real name. There's no way I could pass it off for a girl's name. And of course, boys are off limits. So Lucy it is! "Wait," I add, "I got them mixed up. I'm going to hang out with Lucy later, not Kathy." He nods.
"You know, you never told me about any friends at your old school. I'm glad you've found some. I was worried, since you're a senior and all, switching schools so late." Dad admits, and I just nod.
"Um, is mom home?" I ask, and he points towards the living room. "Thanks!" I say before kissing my dad on the cheek and skipping out of the spacious entryway.
I enter our nice, big living room and see my mom sitting on the couch reading. The T.V. is on, playing the show 'Next Food Network Star'.
Looks like I interrupted my dad's show watching...
"Mom?" I say, standing in the doorway. She looks up and smiles at me, so I step in closer, and tell her quietly, "I have to talk to you about something."
She nods without questioning and follows me up to my room. I love my mom, she's a wonderful listener, and she knows that when I tell her I want to talk to her about something, it's important. And oh boy, this is important.
Once we both get into my room and I close the door, I smile. My room always has this effect on me. It's amazing. It's walls are orange with white splatters everywhere, and the wooden parts of the furniture are all a pale wood. Everything in my room matches, and is lovely. It always makes me smile.
I sit on my white, orange-splattered bed next to my mom and send her a small smile.
"So, I made friends. As I told you yesterday. But, something kinda happened."
My mom looks at me confused, "What kind of something?" She asks.
"An awkward something. Cause, well, my friends are Kathy and Lucas. Lucas being a guy, remember..." I say, and my mom smiles. "Lucas asked me out today." Mom thinks for a quick moment.
"Can I trust this boy?" My mom asks skeptically.
"Yeah. He's really sweet and all." I say, thinking of his eyes, his smile. The way he linked arms with me and skipped all the way to art class with me.
