We dance until Lucas proposes a drink of punch, three songs later. I agree, and he takes my hand, leading me to the drinks table.
"Oh hey there!" Kathy exclaims from the punch bowl when she sees us approaching.
"Hi." I say lazily, having just been forced to leave the comfort of Lucas' arms. Much worse than waking up in the morning, if you ask me.
"Are you two lovebirds having fun?" Kathy teases, and I just nod.
"How about you two?" I ask and look from Kathy to her date and back.
"Yep! Maybe we could all go sit at a table and hang out for a bit?" Kathy's date, I think he's a guy from our art class last semester, asks. I think his name is Levi.
"That sounds like a great idea." Lucas says, and we let Kathy and Levi lead the way.
I interlace my fingers in Lucas', where they fit just right. I smile to myself, leaning my head on his shoulder, and watching Kathy and Levi walking so close together, their heads bent slightly towards each other. I look up at Lucas and smile. I hope Kathy is as happy with Levi as I am with Lucas.
"Isn't it so pretty in here?" Kathy asks, sitting at a small round table with five seats.
"It is. Whoever was decorating did an amazing job. It even smells lovely in here." I say, earning laughter from everyone else.
"Cheers to that!" Lucas says, holding up his glass of punch in one hand, and his stomach on the other. We all raise up our glasses, and touch them in the middle, then we just start talking about random things, laughing at jokes, and basically just enjoying ourselves, on this amazing night.
Some time later, once all the punch has been drained from our glasses, twice, Aren shows up.
"Look! There's my widdle brother!" I say, and gesture to the fifth empty seat. He just rolls his eyes and sits down.
"I was hanging out with my friends, but I figured I'd come see what you guys are up to." He explains.
"Just talking, and drinking punch!" I say, and show him my half-finished glass. "Hey, Aren, do you know when we're going to be getting picked up? And by whom?" I ask after a moment of quiet.
"It's mom," He replies quickly, "Mom is picking us up in like, half an hour."
"What? Only half an hour? We haven't been here for that long. That's not very much time for a dance.." I say, kind of annoyed that I don't get much more time here with my friends.
"Uh, Delilah, you've been here for like, an hour and a half." Aren says, holding back a laugh.
"WHAT?!" Kathy yells, jumping to her feet. "We're dancing."
Aren just bursts into laughter, and everyone else follows suit. I'm fine with that. We spent most of the time just talking, apparently. I'd love to dance with my friends and my boyfriend. Especially that last one.
We all rush onto the dance floor, and dance to Sunburn, the one by Owl City, not Ed Sheeran, or someone else.
And after Sunburn, Raise your glass. Then, after that, 22 by Taylor Swift. And so on, just dancing, until a slow song comes on.
I smile at Lucas, happy that I finally get to dance to a slow song with him. He takes my hand, and I place mine around his neck, and tuck in close to him again. Such a lovely way to begin and end a dance, like this.
