Kathy.
Kathy is sitting, waiting for us in the school field. Sitting at our usual lunch table. Lucas finishes parking, and stares at the expression on my face for a moment. Then he laughs, and takes my hand.
"Did you think I was the only one who really cares about you?" He asks after a while, making me laugh.
"Well, no, but I just didn't know Kathy was in on this." I say with a huge smile on my face.
"Oh, Delilah..." Lucas says, turning fully towards me, and tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear, "Kathy is in on at least a quarter of the plans I've come up with." He tells me, and I furrow my eyebrows.
"Wha-?" I start to ask, but he cuts me off with a kiss.
"Not important. Let's not keep her waiting, okay?" Lucas suggests quickly, and I blink a couple times. Oh, who cares, I'll just ignore this one.
Lucas and I finally step out of the car into the warm late-spring night, and walk hand in hand to Kathy. Kathy, who has forced an annoyed look on her face, and is sitting on the table with her arms crossed over her chest. She's trying so hard to look stern and angry, but her eyes give everything away. She's happy as ever, probably pleased that she saw us being all lovey together or something like that. I don't know why she finds Lucas and I so adorable, but it's her opinion, and I won't even bother arguing.
I send Kathy a look to say 'You're bluffing.', and she bursts into laughter before any words can leave her mouth.
"Well hello there, lovebirds!" Kathy chirps, jumping up from her seat on the table to suffocate us in a hug. And by us, I mean me, because Lucas joined her in creating a sandwich out of me."I've been waiting for a bit, but that's all right, because this isn't about me. This is about making our girl here sleep well tonight, right, Lucas?"
"Spot on, Kathy." Lucas replies.
My friends are amazing, I think to myself and grin.
"I'm glad I switched schools." I tell Kathy and Lucas, and they just squeeze me tighter.
"Guys." I squeak from the middle of the Delilah sandwich. They just laugh and release me. I collapse to the ground, overly dramatically wheezing and gasping for air.
"Oh get up cry baby!" Kathy says, laughing.
"Wah." I stop rolling around to utter that one syllable as unenthusiastically as I possibly can.
"Awe, poor baby do you need a hug?" Lucas asks, and before I can react, he's putting an arm under my knees, and one under my back, and lifting me up, bridal style. I squeal, and laugh as he spins me around. Kathy just giggles, and claps.
By the time Lucas stops spinning, I feel dizzy. I look up at Lucas, and smile. He leans down and gives me a peck on the smile, and I laugh. He then sets me onto my feet gently, readily being a support for me to keep my balance with.
"Let's play tag! You're it!" Kathy yells, and slaps me on the arm, before running away. I smile to myself, and act still extremely dizzy, and unable to move on my own. Lucas continues to be my rest, but eyes me warily. All of a sudden, I tag his arm, and sprint away.
"NO TAG-BACKS!" I yell, and Lucas just laughs.
"Why would you do that?!" Kathy yells, as I stop running and watch Lucas chase Kathy down. I can already feel Lucas' plan to tire me out working, even though I've ran, like, five meters tops. This is going to be a long night.
