"Tell me about Lucas." My mom says one we leave the driveway. I take a deep breath, and try to stomp away the butterflies in my stomach that wake up at the mention of his name.
"Well," I say, smiling. That smile came just as quickly as the butterflies, by the way. "He has brown hair, and amazing hazel eyes. He plays soccer, and he's really nice.."
I launch into full detail, grinning that this is my night to just have fun, and let my guard down for a bit. Who cares about my dad? he won't find out while I'm gone. I am allowed to have a crush, and moon over a boy. I can't believe I didn't realize that until today.
Besides, it's just this one date, right? It can't mean any harm.
Mom pulls into the school parking lot, and I immediately see Lucas sitting on the table under the tree. He sees us, and I wave him over. My heart speeds up as he walks closer, and his details come into focus. He's wearing a white long-sleeved shirt and jeans. You can tell he combed his hair, but messed it up again anyways, and those eyes. They're shining in the moonlight. When he gets close, he smiles. I stand out of the way while he tells my mom when and where to pick us up ("At 10 if that's not too late, here?" I quote. I love how he asked if it was okay.)
Once my mom drives off, Lucas faces me, and the butterflies start freaking out again. He smiles at me, beautiful teeth and all, and takes my hand. I feel tiny sparks tingle through me again as he leads me toward the picnic table.
"You look beautiful." He says when he turns around just before we get to the table. I blush and thank him. I'm just wearing something I might wear to school, I mean, honestly.. But still, having a boys attention on you, and you alone feels nice.
"So what are we going to be doing?" I ask, and he motions for me to sit down.
"I'm going to ask you something." He warns me. I look at him curiously and nod. He clears his throat before speaking, "Delilah, I know I've asked before, but I want it to go proper this time. Will you go on a date with me?"
I laugh. "Yeah, but my father's terrible so just one." I say, still laughing.
"Perhaps." He says with a mischievous smile.
"Okay. Now, shall we? We're just going to go for a bit of a walk, if you don't mind?"
"That's actually a wonderful idea. Let's go." I say, and he leads me in the direction of the river.
Lucas intertwines his fingers with mine, and smiles down at me as if I'm the prettiest girl in the world. And for once, I feel beautiful.
"Let's play a game of truths." Lucas says after a long while of silence. Not the uncomfortable kind, though. The happy kind, as if we have known each other forever.
"Okay. Like, we ask each other questions?" I ask.
"Yeah, like that. But we have to answer our own questions, too." He explains.
"Alright, you ask first." I smile again, fully aware of how close he's walking next to me, and each of his fingers woven neatly into mine. Our hands fit together perfectly.
"Alright," He says, snapping me out of my mini-haze, "If you could be any other creature, real or fictional, what would you be?"
"A mermaid." I answer quickly. I've always loved them, so obviously I'd be a mermaid. "You?"
He chuckles and says, "A horse."
"Cool." I say. Now what should I ask him.. "If you were to write a book, what genre would it be?"
