"Leilani?" I muttered, shuffling into the living room in my daily attire.

"Hmm?" She spoke in response, looking up at me from beneath the fluffy blanket she had wrapped around her.

"I was going to go out food shopping, do you want to, um, come?" I awkwardly babbled out. Her eyes became tainted with a diminutive hint of bewilderment, though it was brief and soon evaporated. She nodded, smiling delicately.

I returned a small smile.
"How about you go get dressed and I'll make breakfast today, yeah?" I asked, bracing myself towards the doorway. She nodded in agreement slowly, before rising to her feet and disappearing upstairs.

I fried and toasted all the breakfast contents before plating them out just as she emerged. Leilani was dressed in a slightly ripped flannel over a plain white shirt, a pair of jeans and some battered Vans that she'd obviously worn in and owned for a long while. Blonde hair set up in a loose ponytail, she sat beside me at the kitchen table as I placed down the plates.

We ate, and after putting on shoes myself - in addition to retrieving the keys - we found ourselves outside, in the morning sun. The sky was finally beginning to seem less bleak, and patches of blue were visible. It was nice.

"Hey! Luke! It's been a while!" Looking to my left, I saw Eden. She was a close friend of my neighbour Ashton's, and she came to visit him whenever she had time away from her busy university schedule. From what it looked, he treated her like family and no one else did.

"Hi, Eden. You're right in saying that." I nodded in acknowledgement.
She sucked in a slight breath, smiling as she looked down at the small figure beside me.
"What's your name, sweetie?"

Leilani seemed too anxious to emit any response, so I spoke for her, saying, "This is Leilani, my daughter." I saw the edges of her mouth quiver slightly to a petite smile.
Upon looking back up, I chuckled at the shock on Eden's face.
"Bye, Eden."

We both got into my car, and I pulled out of the drive and we headed towards the supermarket.

"So, um, do you like pasta?" I asked. Eila nodded.
"Okay good, because there's not much else I can cook." I smiled as she giggled softly. When we approached a red light, I looked at her. She wasn't the futile and fragile girl I'd met only a month before.

She was healthy and happy; her body didn't noticeably have any points where it caved in, her bruises had virtually healed, cuts scarred over, cheeks filled out slightly and eyes vibrant cerulean.

Soon enough, we arrived at our destination, and entered the shop. I grabbed a basket, and noticed Eila reach towards me to clasp my hand in hers. Due to the proportions, that obviously didn't turn out very well, and so (awkwardly at first) I took her small hand in mine. She stood close to me as we shopped. After acquiring everything, we headed towards the till.

Looking up as I paused my unloading onto the conveyer belt, I recognised my curly haired neighbour scanning at the till. Sending him a nod of slight acknowledgement, I payed, bagged up my stuff, and together, Leilani and I left. She suddenly gasped and hid behind me, but soon recovered herself and walked to the car. When I asked her about it later, she didn't answer.
