Chapter 5

“Lucas. Get up.” Lucas shot up from his sleep, realizing he was still at the Grid and Jo was leaning over him. “Ni…sorry.” He mumbled. “Ros wants to talk. You found something, obviously.” Lucas nodded and jumped up.

“Malcolm decrypted what you got this morning, after he got here finding you asleep.” Ros said as soon as Lucas sat down opposite her. “Good morning to you, too.” He grumbled. “So… what was on the stick?” Ros rolled her eyes. “Where did you get it from?” she asked back. “I found it. In the room of the Madam. Jekaterina.” “You think it is her?” Harry asked. “No.” Lucas said. “I think she is the messenger. Grybov can’t meet his contact directly, so he gets her to do it. She can move freely through the city and I bet she gets money for her little service. And other advantages.” Harry nodded. “It sounds reasonable.” Lucas nodded. “Ros.” Harry said, nodding at her.

Lucas leant back in his chair and sighed. This was worse than he expected. The intel had consisted of detailed plans on how to get into a high security laboratory where scientists worked on discovering new vaccines, and necessarily on viruses. One of this biological weapons, CH88, seemed to be of interest to whoever was behind Grybov. “…If someone gets this virus out of there and sets it loose, there will be thousands of people dead. Either here, or somewhere else in the world. It is one of the strongest and most effective biological weapons ever known.” Malcolm ended his summary of the dangers of CH88. They all nodded gravely.

“You know you won’t go to the club tonight. We need you here.” Ros told Lucas as he sat down at his desk to work. “But, it will looks suspicious, if I stay away.” He argued. He had promised Nikki he would be back. He still wanted her out of there. She was in danger. He needed to make sure she was alright. “You stay here. It doesn’t matter what they think anymore, now that we got what we need.” Lucas gritted his teeth. “But…” “I wasn’t suggesting anything, Lucas. You stay here.” Ros said and stood up, letting him know the conversation was over. Lucas cursed lowly. He would get to Nikki tomorrow then. He had to. He was anxious about her. She could be in danger. Because of him.

###

Nikki looked at the clock again. Lucas was not here. Usually he would have arrived about an hour before. She was worried. Was something wrong? He had promised it… He had said he wouldn’t leave her alone. Nikki bit her lip. Had he been lying? She got him what he needed. But he said he cared. He had been so sweet. That couldn’t have been a lie? Could it?

###

Lucas sighed as he sipped another coffee. He felt like he was not getting anywhere with this. And he was constantly worrying about Nikki. If he could at least send someone out to keep an eye on her, or get her out, but that was impossible.

“Anything yet?” Ros asked several hours later as she took a seat next to Lucas. “No.” he replied. “Keep checking. We got detailed plans on how to get inside Bramley Ltd.; we know what they’re working with there. Now who are they? And what are they planning?” Lucas nodded. “We’ll get them.” He said, looking at Ros. “We better, but for now, get some rest. We have done enough for today. I’ll see you back here tomorrow morning.” Lucas nodded. He was dead tired. He half thought of going to the club again, but decided against it when he got in his car.

###

Nikki was tired and sad. Lucas had not shown up yet. It was just after midnight. He wouldn’t come anymore. She went up the stairs for a few minutes of silence when she heard something. It was Grybov yelling. He was arguing with Jekaterina. Nikki crept closer. She could only hear a few parts of the conversation. But Grybov was certainly mad.
