Chapter One:
I Need This Job
"Order up! Table Four! Come on Emma!" the chef yells, voice booming through the crowded kitchen.
"I'm coming, I'm coming!" I exclaimed with exhaust in my voice. I scurried through the steamy kitchen until I reached a tray with four meals placed on it. 'Family breakfast' I assumed. I put the tray in my arms and gave a kind grin to the grumpy chef. He showed no emotion back. Then, I glided through the packed kitchen and out to the seating room of the "All Day Diner" in which I was employed. I narrowed my hazel eyes and scanned the room chalk-full of hungry faces for the table numbered four. Once my target was spotted, I made my way to the table made up of a small family, just as I guessed.
"Hey guys! I've got two short stacks..." I started. I took the plates off their tray and set them in front of the two children.
"Thank you!" the kids cheerfully replied, and I shot them a small smile.
"I have an omelete here," I placed the dish in front of the mother who in return gave a thank you as well.
"And a plate of blueberry waffles!" I finished as I put the last plate in front of the father, who didn't look very pleased.
"Enjoy--" I began, but the father cut me off.
"I ordered chocolate chip waffles," the father grunted. On the inside, I grew incredibly annoyed, but didn't let it show on the outside. I try to never let it show on the outside. I need this job.
"I'm incredibly sorry," I began whilst picking up the dish and placing it back on the tray.
"I'll get you another plate." I spun on my heel to go back to the kitchen.
"Lousy waitress." the father muttered under his breath. I winced at the comment, but continued to walk towards the kitchen to get the man a plate of chocolate chip waffles.
"It's not her fault, you know. It's the kitchen staff's doing." I heard a voice say.
'Oh, no' I thought to myself. I looked around to see who's comment it was, but see none other than my co-worker, Gemma, at table number four. Gemma and Emma. We were practically sisters, and we certainly acted like it.
"Don't blame Emma, it's not her fault." Gemma finished. It was just like my waitress friend to be undeniably sassy. The kids and mom looked a bit set off, while the father appeared completely enraged.
"I'm not paying for any of the food, and I'll be talking to your manager about the way you act towards costumers!" The man was infuriated. At this point in time I set down my tray on the closest table to free my hands in case I needed to run to hold Gemma back.
"Oh, you haven't seen anything yet." Gemma slyly remarked while pulling up her sleeves.
"GEMMA, CUT IT OUT! YOU'RE MAKING A SCENE!" Perrie yelled from inside the kitchen. Perrie was another waitress here, and my closest friend along with Gemma. The three of us stuck together and tried our best to stick up for each other, this kind of scenario is normal, but I guess Gem was feeling extra sassy today. Perrie then shuffled out of the kitchen and over to the table, I stayed right where I was.
"Sir, I have to apologize for Gemma here. Please forgive her temper." Perrie then shot Gem a glare which made her burst into laughter.
I called Gem over to stand by me to avoid any further damage.
"Why did you do that?" I whispered to her.
"To save your ass. You let people walk over you like a doormat. Somebody's got to stand up for you, Em." she explained. I smiled and leaned back against the table, and Gemma did the same. We were going to watch the rest of this scene play out.
"Again, I'm absolutely sorry about this whole thing. Your family's breakfast is on the house. I'm going to get you the right kind of waffles. I'm so sorry." Perrie gushed to the father. This was kind of her specialty, fixing whatever mess Gem and I found ourselves in. This situation was no acceptation. Perrie walked up to us at the table, but instead of saying anything to us she grabbed the plate of blueberry waffles and took them back to the kitchen.
Gemma and I snickered at her attitude before seeing a new family sit down at a table. We rock, paper, scissored to see who would take the table. I lost.
"Welcome to All Day Diner! Can I start you off with some drinks?" I asked in my perkiest tone. The family told me exactly what they want and I trudged back to home base, the kitchen. I poured all the drinks into the appropriate glasses and placed them on my tray. I scampered out of the kitchen and headed for the table, when all of a sudden-- boom. Everything was knocked out of my hands. I squeezed my eyes shut closed, for I didn't want to see the reaction of everyone around me. I really was a lousy waitress. Now, I was drenched and still in a bit of shock. I opened my eyes to reveal everyone in the diner staring at me. Among the people staring at me was Gemma's gorgeous brother, Harry, who was soaked as well.
