Chapter Twenty-one:
Insane and Not Practical
Do you know the best part of working at the diner? The breaks. Absolutely, without a doubt, getting to take breaks and chill out with friends. Today things were a tad different. Perrie, Gemma, and I had the task of training the new waitress, Madysin. She preferred Mady, and often went by that. From what I could tell, the new girl was pretty nice and fits into our group well. Maybe our trio would become a quartet? Who knows, she's pretty cool. Her dark brown hair was tucked into a messy bun and set adorably on the top of her head. She had a sort of hipster/rocker nature to her and her vibe was one I enjoyed. I didn't know too much about her, but I could see her becoming a great friend of mine and the girls.
"How are things with Harry?" Perrie asked, bringing me out of my thinking trance. Herself along with Gemma and Mady stared at me with huge eyes, anxiously awaiting a response.
"Who's Harry?" Mady questioned and Gemma perked up before responding.
"My brother! And Emma's boyfriend." A smug look spread across her face almost identical to the one her brother likes to sport. It must be a Styles thing.
Mady turned to me with a cheeky grin and I was honesty growing uncomfortable.
"He's not my boyfriend!" I protested and threw my arms up in the air in rage. Perrie let out a little giggle and Mady set her gaze on the floor, almost a little embarrassed that she asked.
"You're living together. And I can see it in his eyes and tell by the way he talks to you." Gemma explained. Mady and Perrie 'ooh'ed and 'aah'ed, and I really just wanted to move on from this awkward conversation. Why was the love-life drama always concentrated on me? Can't somebody else take a turn?
"I uh.." I stuttered, but luckily I was saved by the bell. Literally. The 'ding' of the diner door went off numerous times, signaling more people coming into the restaurant. In clusters, many people filled in, seating themselves. Groups, families, couples, single people... The All Day Diner was full. Jam-packed for lunch time. Concerned looks grazed the faces of my friends and I as we observed the dining room full of hungry costumers.
"Hey, Mady? Do you think you can waitress some tables alone? We need to spread ourselves thin. I know it's your first day, but can you do it?" Perrie asked concerned. We all turned to Mady who gave a carefree shrug and a half smile.
"Why not? Let's do this."
..
It's a funny concept that working at the diner actually requires getting out from behind the break counter sometimes. Sluggishly, I crawled out from my comfortable place and began to tend to my first table, a small family. Families were always my least favorite group of people to work with. Their unpredictably made it really difficult to successfully keep all members of the family happy.
As always, I put on my smile and dealt with them. I put on my smile and dealt with another table. Another and another and more, and I was making tons of tips. Consent trips from the dining area to the kitchen to the cash register made me head dizzy, but the time went by moderately fast. I glanced at the clock, and much to my surprise, the time really was zipping by. My shift was about half over already!
Finally, the business began to slow down a little. I was very satisfied with what I made in tips so far, and it made me think that I was doing quite alright without my other job. Quite alright? Better than that. I was happier, more free, and a better person without any of it, and I was still making money. I was still okay.
On a different note, Mady seemed to be doing okay on her own. Only a couple times did she ask Perrie for help. I remember my first day here months ago, every other minute I had a question that needed to be answered. But Mady? She had it all under control. Her waitressing skills were very impressive... She should be training me instead! At first glance, she didn't strike me as the person that would have talent at this job due to her careless aura, but she was definitely surprising me in a good way.
