Juniper;

"Just leave me. I want to be with her." Betsy motions to her sister on the ground, lying almost peacefully with a bullet through the back of her head. Carl's bullet.

"No." I protest. "We'll leave you a gun or... A knife. You don't have to become one of those things. Here, take my gun." I pull my gun out of my back pocket and go to hand it to the girl.

"No." I feel a hand on mine. I turn back to see Carl looking at me, pulling back the gun. "Leave her be. We've done this before, my group, she'll die peacefully."

"Thank you." Betsy says weakly. She leans against a tree and holds the pearl around her neck.

"She's ready. Why aren't you?"

Because I'm stronger than that.

"June, lets go." Carl's gentle voice says from behind me.

"Where'd you get your necklace?" I writhe my arm out of Carl's hand and squat down, looking Betsy in the eyes.

"It was Maddie's. She gave to me after we lost our brother." She smiles down at the necklace, holding it in her hand.

She looks back up to me and her dark brown irises widen, "You're lucky, don't waste your luck. I know it wasn't y'alls fault that you killed Maddie. He said it was an accident. I trust him."

"You don't even know him." I tell her while I look back at Carl. He still looks ill, the scar on his face stretching from the edge of his nose to his ear, he's been through a lot.

"I am an easy person to get along with." Betsy voice turns me around to look back at her. "I forgive in a snap. I forgive both of you, especially him, because I know that both of you are strong and you're smart and really good people. And I believe in both of you. Accidents happen."

"Thank you Betsy, I'll remember you." I say as I turn to face Carl. He rolls his eye and kneels down next to me.

"You had a good run." He says. His voice is calming, as if he's trying to lull her to sleep.

"Leave me, you two have better to do."

"Goodbye Betsy." I say, tearing up.

;

"You have no soul." I giggle at Carl.

"I'm sorry, I think the soul just got sucked out of me. I'm nothing but an empty husk."

"Very funny."

After we left Betsy, I tried to lighten the mood. I was crying about someone I didn't even know and Carl remained stone cold with a blank expression.

I told him he had no emotion and gladly took it the right way.

"Juniper, look. The hordes gone..."
