I walked into the hospital with the with the triplets.
We were coming to see Lori today.
She's been doing well, according to the doctor's she's been progressing, but she still doesn't really know me as anything other than "the man that comes every day."
I took the kids down to the daycare facility, and rode the elevator to her floor.
I walked up to her door and opened it.
"Hey, Lori."
"Hi you're back! Hi!" He arms were bandaged so her stiches could heal and her foot was better now, but she still had something on it to a line her ankle back into place.
"How are you?" I brought her balloons and some chocolate. The last time I brought her flowers she threw them on the floor and said she needed something to play with.
"Oh...balloons..."
"You feeling okay?"
"I'm sore."
"Ouch! Really?"
"Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Give me the chocolate."
"Can I show you something?"
"What is it?"
"Just pictures."
"Okay. Okay. Okay. I wanna see."
I grabbed my phone and sat next to Lori I showed her a picture of the triplets.
"Aww look at the babies! Are they yours."
"Yes they are."
"They're precious."
"You wanna see more?"
"Yes. Yes. Yes."
I scrolled to a picture of the our wedding.
"That's strange. It... feels like I've been there."
Lori took my phone and looked through my photos she was flipping through them quickly and her eyes were getting wider by the second.
She stopped on a picture of her and her godmother.
She looked at me strangely and her hands shook with frustration.
She pulled the phone closer to her face and shook. I held her hand and she continued to shake and she set the phone down.
"Who was that woman?"
"That was your godmother."
She forcefully grabbed my arm and she started looking at my hands.
She interlocked her fingers with mine.
I think she was starting to remember. She looked down and rubbed my hand.
She let go of me and rested her hand on my cheek and I rubbed her arm.
She looked into my eyes fiercely.
"Are you starting to remember?"
"I know you. I don't know how, but I know you. You're something important to me."
"You know the kids I showed you?"
"They're mine?"
"They're ours"
"I'm somebody's momma?"
"All three."
"Can I see them?" She started to cry. "Do you have them?"
"Yes. Of course. I'll be right back." I went downstairs and got the triplets from the daycare.
"Here they are."
"What....what are their names?"
"Well you named our daughter Bernadette after my mother. And this one is Brandon, and little junior."
"Junior is named after you?"
"Bruno junior, bj for short."
"Bruno?"
"Bruno is my nickname."
"Oh. C-can I hold one of them?"
"Yes, you're the mother of course."
She picked up Bernie abd rocked her back and forth.
Bernie grabbed her finger.
"Oh look at that. She...She's mine. This is my daughter and I... don't even remember having them. I dont remember giving birth to my children!"
I took Bernie from her.
"It's okay. You just got out of a serious accident. Its fine."
"Are...are you my husband?"
"Yes I am."
"You asked me to marry you?"
"Yes. I've asked you to marry me three times and the first time was a disaster. The second time you said no and you made me ask again. We've known each other for a while."
"How did I met you?"
"Wow I will never forget that. The night I met you I had just moved to new york city and I was at this party because I wanted to become a famous singer. And I ran into you and when you looked at me I had to have you."
"You had to have me?"
" I felt it. Someone hurt you and your manager fired you but-"
"But you followed me and you told me that...you wanted to help me." She said.
She smiled at me.
"You...You're my husband." She said
"For almost a year now baby."
"I remember Bruno. I remember and I love you. I love you so much baby."
I wiped her falling tear.
"I love you too baby."
