Chapter 14: The Neighborhood
I tried to convince Skylar that we should go straight to Trevor's house and tell him to whole plan flat out. I was anxious, and I wanted nothing more to stand in my way, not even time itself. I was ready to do this. Now. It was only 7:00pm, and the way I saw it, we still have five more hours today. To me, time is of the essence, and there is no sense in wasting it. But Skylar disagreed, and she had her reasons.
"Pierce, I just think it would be best if I told him."
"Yeah no problem, I'll just sit back and let you do all the the talking. Just point the way!" I start my engine and slap my hands on the wheel, trying to act completely oblivious to the "you know what I mean" expression on Skylar's face.
"Alone."
"Oh okay, I guess I can wait in the car while you go in and talk to him."
She sighs. "Explaining everything is going to take longer then a few minutes, Pierce. I'm gonna need some time with him alone tonight, especially if we want his help. You understand..."
Yeah I understand alright. I imagine she will be using her "charm" to ease him into the news subtly. What she needs is time to kiss-up to him, literally. Well whatever will work I guess....
"I see how it is..." I nod my head slowly, narrowing my eyes in an over exaggerated suspicion. "Well I guess I can spare tonight if you can guarantee his cooperation."
She smiles, satisfied. "Thank you. I promise I'll call you first thing in the morning and so we'll have all day to figure out a plan, okay?"
"Yeah yeah, whatever." I tease, acting like I'm genuinely disappointed.
"Oh stop it." She says amusedly, slapping my arm. "Just drive."
I back out of the parking space and am driving on the main road within thirty seconds. When Skylar wasn't directing me on which way to turn, she spent most of the time telling me to slow down, or complaining that I ran a red light. Then, I got stuck behind a freakin' tailgater so I held down my horn for a few seconds in hopes they would speed up. Did they? Absolutely not. So I swerved out of that lane into the next one and stuck my arm out my window yelling "Put in in drive Pearl!" They had the nerve to look at me like I'm the one who's crazy. People these days....
Well anyway, it turns out they were some of the people Skylar skates with, so apparently that embarrassed her. Instantly when she recognized them, she ducked her head down to her knees, and it stayed like that the rest of the way there. I couldn't stop laughing at her, which made her irritated with me even more so. I'm pretty sure she yelled "shut up!" over a hundred times within a five minute span. Needless to say, I enjoyed every minute of it.
"What did you say it was called again?" I ask.
"Um...Clifton Estates."
"Oh good. I see the entrance from here."
