Chapter 5: Interrogated
The ride home was different then normal. Sadie and I really didn't know what to say to each other, so we just stayed pretty quiet. I tried once to start up a casual conversation but it made me look even stupider. Just when I thought I couldn't possibly screw up any more today. News flash: It NEVER ends.
"Man, I hate red lights."
"Yeah, doesn't everyone?"
"I guess. They seem like they are getting longer these days." Wow Pierce really?
"Mmhmm."
Silence.
"Pierce, don't take this the wrong way but maybe you should slowdown a little?"
Who's driving? ME. That mean I'M the one who gets to pick the speed. Deal with it.
I push these thoughts away and say "I'm not going that fast. Besides, no one is around."
"Yeah but--"
I cut her off. "So you going to school tomorrow?" Out of all the questions I could have asked, that was the dumbest.
"Well yeah...Why wouldn't I?"
I mentally slap myself. Yeah Pierce, what's your excuse for your stupid question?
"Uhhh..." I sort of let out a chuckle. "Well to be honest....That was one of my brilliant conversation starters." I say sarcastically. "Right now I'm feeling pretty stupid."
She half smiles. "That's the best you can come up with?" I can't tell if she is joking with me or mocking me.
So I go with a neutral answer. "Apparently so...."
More silence. I hope this doesn't become a habit....
I'm not about to strike up another conversation, so I turn on the radio for some music. We listen to a couple songs and make a few subtle comments in between. Suddenly I notice flashing lights reflect onto the inside of my car. That better not be what I think it is....
"Uhh Pierce..." She sounds a bit worried as she motions for me to look in the rear view mirror.
Low and behold, a police car is following us with its lights on. I curse under my breath. As I turn into the 7-11 parking lot, the officer turns the siren on.
"Are you kidding me?! He knew I was pulling over! What a son of a b--"
Sadie shoots me a glare.
"A uhhh ....biscuit."
"Thought so." Jeez...Why do I feel like a married couple?
Just then the officer knocks on my window. Don't screw this up Pierce. Keep it cool.....
I roll down my window. "Well hello officer. I hope your shift is going well so far." I say too happy, almost to the point that it sounds sarcastic. Ok not that cool...
He stares at me for a moment, and I can easily read his expression: Don't mess with me.
"So what seems to be the problem?"
"Are you aware that you were driving over the speed limit?"
"No sir, I wasn't."
He gives me that classic, (not to mention intimidating) officer look before he speaks. "Drivers licence."
I open my wallet and extend it towards him. While he takes it, I notice his expression turn to suspicion. He furrows his eyebrows as his eyes shift from me to Sadie. He leans into the car a little and takes two large sniffs.
