"Absolutely not." I said, throwing down the envelope. Kerr stared at me in anticipation.
"Please Lexi! This means a lot to me!"
"Kerr I'm not attending some masquerade ball, so you can spent the time to make out with your boyfriend."
"He's not my boyfriend."
"Whatever, that's besides the point, I don't do dances unless I'm incredibly wasted and I plan on going home with someone."
"Lexi! James will be there. In a tux. You can go home with him, but I can't do this without you!" She was giving me the puppy eyes which she knew were my weakness.
"Stop Kerr...I'll think about it okay?" I gave in. I couldn't help it. Kerr started bouncing up and down in excitement. I rolled my eyes when she started talking about dresses.
"Wait here, I'm gonna go get some stuff." She said, running upstairs. I twiddled my thumbs aimlessly for a couple seconds before there was a knock on the door. I went to go open it, only to see my favorite person, Gavin, standing there.
"Oh joy it's you." I said, holding the door open.
"Nice to see you too princess. Where's Kerr?" He asked, letting himself in and walking to the kitchen.
"Getting some stuff for that stupid masquerade ball. She's trying to make me go." He grabbed a water bottle out of the fridge before looking at me.
"Seriously? You aren't really the ball type." He said, leaning against the counter opposite of me. I hopped up to sit on it.
"No shit Sherlock."
"Who's taking you?"
"I didn't realize it was a date thing." He smirked.
"That's the short answer for no one's asked you."
"Oh please Lahar, you wish. I was asked. By James." Something flashed in Gavin's eyes before he chucked the water bottle into the recycling and pushed himself off the counter, walking closer to me.
"James Williams? You guys have been getting closer." He narrowed his eyes.
"James and I have always been close."
"Too close. Kissing on the field, holding hands, that's not you Lex." He walked so he was standing directly in front of me.
"What's up Gavin? You jealous?"
"So what if I was? What would you do?" He whispered. He dropped his hands to my thighs, pulling them apart so he could stand in between my legs. He wrapped my legs around his waist so we were impossibly close. I was having a hard time focusing on anything but how close he was to me. Swallowing my labored breath, I managed to answer his question.
"I would remind you that you are with Kerr so anything between us doesn't matter." He leaned forward, pressing his lips to the hollow in my neck, tightening his hands around my waist.
"I'm not with Kerr, Princess. She's just a distraction." I couldn't focus with his lips on my body. Call me weak but Gavin was my weakness.
"And what am I?" I managed to gasp. He moved away from my neck, putting our lips just brushing together.
"Not a distraction. You are a focus point. Don't go with James to the ball." He said, moving back down to my neck.
"LEXI!" A girl yelled down at me, breaking me out of my trance.
"Oh my god." I said, shoving Gavin away from me, blushing like crazy. Kerr entered the room, smiling at Gavin.
"I didn't know you were here!" She said, moving forward to hug him, but he moved out of her way. She frowned but didn't say anything in question.
"We are still set for going to the ball together right?" She asked. I looked at Gavin who was looking at me.
"Yes we are." My heart dropped slightly but I kept my emotions in check.
"You know what Kerr? Count me in. I'll go call up James and tell him I accept. I'll see you later." Gavin widened his eyes at me but I turned and left. Screw that.
I ran back home not being able to process what happened in the kitchen. What does he mean a focus point? When I reached my home, I ran up the stairs to my room where I opened one of my drawers and fished around before I found a chain. I pulled out the necklace, wiping it off from the dust. I clipped it on my neck and stared at the mirror.
Monica Lahar. Gavin's mom's dog tag. Something he gave to me when we were little to keep safe. Out of all the things I returned to him, including my favorite maroon sweatshirt I wore everyday of my crying pity party, I never returned the dog tag. I couldn't.
But now I could. Now, I would.
*One week later*
I stood in the bathroom with Kerr curling my hair. Her hair and both of our makeup were already done. She was going on about some couple from school that broke up when I interrupted."Hey Kerr, how are you and Gavin?" She slightly dropped the curling wand to make contact with her skin.
"Shit." She gasped as I whirled around.
"Oh my god, Kerr are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine, my own fault. Turn back around." I did what she said and she continued with my hair. "Um, Gavin and I are kind of in a place right now."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I think he has eyes on someone else. Which is fine whatever, we aren't dating, but still. He talked to me first about getting back together." My hands shook slightly as I tried to gain composure of my voice.
"Maybe it's for the best."
"Maybe. I just wish Gavin would stop messing up my life." My hand subconsciously went to the chain around my neck.
"Yeah, me too." Kerr gave me a look in the mirror but didn't say anything.
"You are all done. Now come see the dress I picked out for you." She said, leading me into my room. On the bed was mint green dress with silver jewels.
"That one?" I asked, trying not to frown. Kerr giggled.
"No, this one." She unzipped the black bag and pulled out one of the most gorgeous dresses I've ever seen. It was red, with one one shoulder, floor length and silver jewels. There were a gold pair of shoes to match by it.
"Kerr..." I was speechless.
"Put it on silly!" The doorbell rang and I held up a finger.
"Hold that thought." I said rushing downstairs and pried the door open only to see the stoop empty. I looked around and then something caught my eye on the floor. It was a beautiful black mask and a note.
Alexa,
Please wear this mask tonight so I can find you. I'm sorry I can't go with you, but I will find you and I will dance with you. Just please wear it."Lex, who is it?" Kerr asked walking over. I held up the mask.
"No idea."
