I stood in front of the table with my arms crossed. Everyone was masked so finding James was useless. I mean obviously he sent the mask. I kept chugging the champagne so I think I was slightly drunk. Also that beer I had before coming here probably didn't help either.
"Slow down there speedy." Someone joked behind me. I turned to give them a glare only to see it was James.
"Yeah well maybe if you didn't keep me standing here the whole damn night I wouldn't be drinking so much." He took my hand.
"I'm sorry. Come dance with me." He said pulling me to the dance floor. He put his mask on again covering his eyes, letting the string go over his brunette hair. He put one hand on my waist and one in my hand. We started moving back and forth.
"I love the mask." I stepped back a little, giving him a look.
"You didn't give it to me?" He shook his head.
"Oh." I moved back in, considering my options.
"Will you get me a drink?" He nodded and left me on the floor. I stood there for a minute admiring the lights before deciding to walk out to the outer corner. A hand was pressed against the small of my back and I jumped slightly. A brunette boy-James-smiled at me.
"Where were you going?"
"Well, you left to go get drinks which I see you failed to do so I decided to stand instead of looking like an idiot in the middle of the floor." His smiled faltered a bit but quickly smiled again.
"You look beautiful tonight." He said. He moved closer, putting his hands on the tops of my arms. Sparks flew and I unconsciously moved closer to him.
"Something about you is different." I mumbled but brushed it off. He leaned in closer and whispered to me.
"Thanks for wearing the mask." He turned and walked away and I registered what he said. And how he said it. James said he didn't give me the mask. And James didn't have a Spanish accent. One that was extremely sexy and only one guy in my life could pull off.
Gavin.
I pushed back in the crowd, following him. I don't know what I was going to say to him but I needed to talk to him. Figure something out. I kept pushing and saw a boy talking to a man and a woman in the corner. Bingo. I walked over and spun him around. Gavin looked at me steadily.
"What is going on?" I asked him. He looked at me and then at the people. I realized they were there and I took my hand off his shoulder.
"Alexa, this is Luke and my sister Charlotte." Gavin said, not taking his eyes off me.
"Hello again Alexa." Luke said, smiling warmly.
"You two know each other?" Gavin asked.
"Yeah we met at your soccer game." I said.
"Well, we should let you talk. I'll see you in Florida on Monday then." Luke said, shaking Gavin's hand and smiling at me before turning away. I crossed my arms over my chest, looking at Gavin.
"Florida?" I asked.
"I'm leaving to check out the naval base for a couple weeks." He said.
"What?" We stared at each other for a couple seconds.
"I'm not leaving forever, I'll be back."
"I'm not concerned about that."
"Then what are you concerned about?"
"This whole situation! It's crazy! And not you! People die in the military Gavin, I'm not sure you realize that! How could you just leave everything, your family and friends, everyone that cares about you to be stationed somewhere uncertain about your death?" I was borderline hysterical just thinking about it. As much as I couldn't admit it to his face, I care about him.
