Chilling morning breezes stirred the falling snow making it twist and turn, the thin ice glinting in the week sunlight. Frost clung to every branch and twig and snow blanketed the rotting undergrowth. The camp was empty, all the cats were in their dens hiding from the harsh cold and trying to stay warm. Leafbare had hit hard in the forest and poor TigerKit was shivering as water dropped onto his soaked head. After the storm the nursery roof began to leak right above TigerKits' favorite spot on the moss bed. Shuffling closer to his mother, he embedded himself in her velvety pelt and, for a moment, closed his eyes and thought of the forest. He thought of the towering trees, damp undergrowth and lush bush creating pictures that danced around his head. Eventually he drifted off to sleep safe in the thought that he was to roam such unfamiliar territory.
TigerKit woke up startled by a prodding paw. Yawning, he opened his eyes to see his sister, RavenKit, a dark, blue-grey tabby with black stripes and blue eyes, staring down at him.
"Finally!" She complained with an irritated tone . TigerKit, struggling out of sleep, sat up and began to groom his ruffled fur.
"Lets go outside!" RavenKit squeaked clearly excited. He stared at the white light that flooded in from the nursery entrance. Judging from the brightness of it TigerKit guessed the sun had already risen well above the tree line. Nevertheless it was still freezing and he did not like the idea of leaving the warm nest he currently resided on.
"I..I don't know" he yawned "it looks cold." When he gazed back at his sister she had a look of disappointment on her face. Then, she smirked, making TigerKit uneasy.
"You aren't scared are you?" TigerKit flinched at the words that came from her mouth.
"Do you think you might..... freeze to death!?" She bounded forward leaving only an inch between him and her.
"O..of course not!" He growled, jumping up and pinning her to the ground "You're the one that's going to freeze!"
"Sure..." RavenKit smiled as if she thought she was better than him then pushed him off. With a shiver TigerKit remembered the stories about the cats that froze to death during the great journey then tried to push the thought away.
"Don't speak nonsense! You're not going to freeze! Just stay in camp and don't bother anyone please" RobbinWing interrupted. TigerKit stared at his mother, her pelt, black as night and her brown under belly, shone in the dim light. He looked down at his scruffy pelt and tried to smooth it. Spotting his struggle RobbinWing bent down and, with a purr, smoothed it down for him.
"Thanks mum" he said sarcastically, glaring at RavenKit whilst she tried to hide her amusement. TigerKit took the opportunity and sped towards he nursery entrance. Determined to beat him, his sister followed and they burst into the unknown side by side.
